Abletons new technology, Link, is now available as a free update in Live 9.6. Live 9 users can login and download the update now from their account page.
If you have not yet heard about Link, it is a technology that lets you play electronic instruments together effortlessly. Link synchronizes beat, phase and tempo of Live and Link-enabled iOS apps over a wireless or ethernet connection, which means you can use it to play together with others and make music using a range of devices.
Watch how Link lets you bring sources of inspiration together in the studio – keeping Live and music-making apps in perfect time.
I used this for the first time yesterday as it works great. We had two macbooks each running ableton and push 2.
It was simple to set up. Simply make sure you are both on the same network viw either wifi or lan connections and then switch link on in preferences.
Once you are hooked up you can change tempo on one machine and all other devices on the network instantly adjust to match the tempo. It makes jamming out a tune in ableton great fun as all the parts fall into time. Due to the tempo syncing across devices all the delays and other time based effects fall in time.
We even went as far as to record parts on one device while the others are running. We then stopped the recording device, made a few edits and then jumped back into the session without loosing time.
It seems as long as one device is still active within the LINK session you can power down a device, close ableton or do anything else and then jump back in when you are ready without any problems.
For me this is quite a game changer. No wires, no midi sync devices. Just join the private network and you are away.
Ill be trialing some of the ipad aps in the near future and will report back on how we got on with those.
Have you tried Link yet ? If not then I recommend that you give it a try.
When you do come back and let us know what you think.
Head over to Ableton and download Live 9.6 or download one of the many aps available for iphone or ipad.
