Description : Well, yesterday I did another cover tune, this time an REM song from the album "Monster." I've wanted to cover this song for quite some time, and it all fell into place in just a couple hours. I took one of the basses from my modular synth, and the intro atmosphere was played on my optical theremin. In the chorus there is an arpeggiated organ sound which is sampled from my Gibson G-101 organ. The drums are all samples, and the rest of the synths are VST. Very interested to hear the reaction to this, as it's quite different from the original. Thanks for listening.

REM are legends.. never on a playlist of mine but the appreciation is there.. You've got something unique going on with your vocals.. but, just my taste, I think you should try something a little less processed... see how it works for ya... I know how it feels mixing your own voice... terrible I know.. but I'd like to hear yours

Yes, REM are pretty cool, or at least they have been in the past. I appreciate your suggestion about my vocals, and you're not the only one who has brought that up. I will be working on hiding a little less in the future. Thanks much for the review!

Thanks so much man! REM isn't really in my top ten or anything, but I've always felt something for the "Monster" album, and this song has been speaking to me lately. It seemed like it would be a great electronic song, so I went for it. Glad you think my voice sounds okay in this setting. I appreciate your review!

I'm liking this remix style. You've really approached this cover in your own style and it works really well.
The vocals and the mix are all on point and it's very original.

I am not familiar with the original so hearing it for the first time any other version will be compared to this one. I really like the electro vibe and I like the effects on your vocals. As usual the production is superb in my ears. You also bring emotion which is always hard for me. You seem very comfortable. Nice piece of work!

Hi Spiv,
Thanks for this nice "surprise": you covering REM was not the most obvious thing to expect :-)
I love REM, though Monster is definitely not my favorite album.
Your rendition of this song is really special: I think the original is way darker. You chose to use "more open" sounds and yet reach a level of "uneasiness" that really stands out.
You singing hip-hip-hurray is almost scary. And that's meant as a compliment!
Beautiful. Looking forward to hearing more from you.
Thanks.
Ciao, Domenico

Thanks so much for your kind words Domenico! It's interesting to hear you say that the original is way darker, I guess you're probably right. Hello Patrick (first name that I discovered here)

Me, I do not dream .... but there are here yet, your originality, your musical personality, no doubt .... It is not always easy to orchestrate a well-known base, but here you have your very successful challenge.
It is not the flowers that I launch to you (French expression) I really think .... Do not change your way to make.

You have yet to disappoint, Mr. Spivkurl. You definitely have a sound that's all yours, and you own it. Upfront it seems like such a simple, almost fumbly style. But, once you start to listen to what's really happening, it's very intricate and involved. I've always said that if you're going to do a cover, make it your own. Otherwise, you're just imitating. You definitely made it your own, and it's a better song for it. Awesome work, man.

I've been an REM fan since the ep with Gardening at Night and 1,000,000, think it's called Chronic Town. I thought the Monster album was kinda dark and something different from those guys. I really like the cover. It has elements from the original but you added so much of the Spivkurl touch that it really takes on a life of it's own. Excellent job Spiv, the vocals were very cool and out front in the mix, great job!

Gonna dl this so a big thanks for sharing!

Hey Wayne, thanks for joining me for the listen! I've been into REM for a long time too, they're sort of underrated. I agree that Monster is pretty dark. I thought it was really cool to find out that each song's vocals were done with a different microphone on that album. I'm glad you don't mind the out front vocals, I used a pretty long chain of effects to give them that edge. Thanks so much for DL'ing and the fave, I appreciate the listen!

Description : This is one of my earliest productions that I did at the start of my recording career. I did not have a keyboard at the time I made this song, so I improvised and used my sister's iPad and a 5 dollar GarageBand application instead, and plugged the headset jack into into my PT6 rig and did my best to turn each individual track (which were mono and there were about 25 tracks or so) into a stereo image. Then recorded vocals over it. My computer was so old and slow that I had to mix my music and then BOUNCE it to a new session - four times. My computer (which had 512 MB RAM and an 80 GB hard drive) couldn't handle more than 8 tracks at a time or it'd stop working because the processor couldn't handle it. Took me FOREVER to do. But I got it done. Had a lot of fun doing it too, even if it isn't my "best" work. I'm still happy with it, considering I didn't have many tools to choose from at the time.

Description : Far out mid-tempo fat beat deep chillout grooves with Eastern/Arabic and slightly menacing vibes, huge delayed synth bass and a great palette of psychedelic layered and intricate sounds (mostly synths) and a stirring, epic feel. Even has guitar solo section reminiscent of some 80s power rock which is then followed by a brief synth harp solo. I began making it straight after staying round the flat of the flute player from the legendary Ozric Tentacles - easily the greatest ever space rock band. I made this in about 2001 and still think it might be my best track (and it's nice and short, for a change). My production skills were much weaker in those days (no EQ, compression or mastering used here) but, somehow, this one turned out pretty much just right. Feel free to disagree. Now sit back and get ready to trip extremely far out. If you manage to return, let me know how that trip was...
