After you reviewd my track I was very curious what you have put on here. I knew from your knowledgable review that you know what you are doing and I wasn't dissapointed. First of all I don't know in what genre to put this. But it is unique in its own way! Really love how this track evolves and evolves from heavy rock into a very tensionfilled bridge working into the more metally vibe. Feels like an explosion of energy. The crisp clear mix defeintely helps with this. I especially love how you panned your instrumenst to give them more space to shine. With a stereo imager you really see how you expanded the sound to make it very full and clear! Nothing is overscreaming eachother which can happen fast when mixing guitars and drums. All in all this is just a very special piece of music and I will listen to it a few more times, as I can learn from this a lot!

Hi V, once again, this was an extraordinary sonic experience that I was able to enjoy with my ears. Very full-bodied in an absolutely clear sound environment. Really well done! Best regards, Manuela

It feels like the drums want to be from different genres. There are cool, ripping ones in the middle and slow ones at the end. It adds variety. I liked it. The only thing is that the percussion in the middle is very distracting. I think it's a bit unnecessary.

Hello, Alex.
Seeing your comments on other tracks has led me to believe that tact is undeniably not your strong suit. Therefore, I take your feedback with a grain. Although I appreciate what you're attempting to say, I can't help but wonder if you have a severe lack of understanding of what Heavy Metal is, and what it's mostly comprised of.
It seems to me that if you find drums beyond four on the floor to be distracting, then perhaps you should avoid any Metal tracks in the future. Otherwise, you're inviting inevitable frustration and disappointment into your life.
None the less, I appreciate your feedback, however misguided it may be.
Take care.

Killer track - so intricately layered and well made - absolutely reminds me of why people say classical music and heavy metal share a lot of commonalities. Beautiful composition and very fine craftmanship
ValveDriver
ValveDriver replied 6th Oct 2024 - 4 months ago
Pseudo, thank you. I appreciate it. There are definitely a lot of similarities between metal and classical, but beyond the distortion, there are still so many differences. I like to think of it as if Metal is Classical's angry grandchild.
Thanks for the time and the comment. Again, I appreciate it.

Damn - this is so cool - the guitars sounds are fantastic and it is so meticulously and brilliantly constructed and well produced - real trip on my headphones - not only is nothing out of place but everything is in just the right place. Metal is not a genre Ive listened to much is the more recent years but you are reminding me how good it can be. I cant imagine how long this took but however long it was worth it : )

ValveDriver replied 6th Oct 2024 - 4 months ago
Nonube, thank you for taking the time to listen and comment.
I don't think metal is something I'm capable of not listening to for any extended time. I've been a metalhead since the cold war. The adults back then always said "It's just a phase. He'll grow out of it.". Nope. Never did.
As far as how long it took, a total working time of 19 hours and some change. I think at least a good third of that time was just getting the mix balanced.
Anyhow, thanks again. I appreciate it.
Take care.

It sure is a brilliant sequencing, to my ears as if you played these guitars and bass instruments. Very realistic. I agree with your opinion about the psychedelic influences in your track. Yes it was kind of a trip, a bit rough, as if in a windy day.
Very well done

part 1:
just listened to this on headphones while having my hedonistic coffee & jazz cigarette 'breakfast'. still haven't slept sadly but there's no going back at this time now.
holy moly, that was an intense trip indeed. clean and well-balanced yet energetic sound. outstanding mix which i think made it even more engaging.
i enjoy slow build-ups, so i never wished it would progress quicker. through the headphones i noticed how every sound has its own space and similar frequencies of different sounds don't get in the way of each other.
man, the low-end sounds nuts on my headphones. did you use a high-pass on the instrument buses besides bass and drums, i presume?
the bass felt mighty and went straight into my skull and bones. impressive energy when it takes off shortly before the 3 min mark.
ValveDriver
ValveDriver replied 18th Sep 2024 - 5 months ago
For the guitars and bass, I just EQ them side by side so I can make sure the frequencies across the board are cut or boosted in a way that they are all level with no gaps or overlaps. I do cut below 30h and above 10kh. Just to keep it clean since you can't really hear those anyhow. On their buses I use a multiband compressor. Mainly as a form of EQ more than compression. I like to keep my levels lower during the process and boost them in the master.
I do the same thing with the drums. Each piece has it's own mixer track where they are EQ'd and then sent to the bus. Same process as the guitars. After they all go to the master I just boost the levels and if I need to, I use a compressor, a little saturation and a limiter. I think the mixing and tweaking take longer than building the track itself. Which is fine, that's the part I enjoy the most.

doudei 17th Sep 2024 09:03 - 5 months ago
part 2:
when you layer those distorted instruments that have been recorded, do you have to pay attention to the phase and manually nudge waveforms depending on their phase offset or is that obsolete these days in FL?
listen, i am by no means a connoisseur when it comes to this kind of mixing and mastering plus i haven't slept in a while. still, to me that sounds ready to go.
that was a blast! going to listen on speakers next to compare.
ValveDriver
ValveDriver replied 18th Sep 2024 - 5 months ago
I'm one of those that enjoy the tedious act of drawing in the notes and beats one note at a time in the piano roll. Each hit of every piece of the drums, every "pick of the strings". All one click at a time. I don't record anything. But, to answer your question, I do have to nudge the right and left guitar just a touch to avoid phasing.
I really appreciate you taking to time to listen, and to comment so thoroughly. I hope I was able to adequately answer your questions.
Let me know how it sounded on the speakers. I have to admit, I was a little lazy with this one as far as checking against all my different systems. So, some levels may be a little too much, or too little.
Thank you for taking the time, man. I do appreciate it.
Take care.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's just a little different compared to my usual attempts. It means a lot that I was able to inspire you.

As far as what I used, I'm assuming you mean software for the guitars, etc.

For the guitars I used Shreddage II and III. For the bass guitar I used Native Instruments Rickenbacker. The amp sims are from Line 6's Pod Farm 2. The synth effect in the intro, outro, and scattered in a few places here and there I made using Sylenth1. The drums are Easy Drummer metal kit.
I hope that answers your question.

Take care.

Big V, Bringing the Prog, I'm Bringing the Bug Spray. I hate Locusts. Bass reminds me of Floyd's "Run like Hell" I Love the slow build of guitar treatments with a subtle than not so subtle wah. Even some Nu-metal elements in there. Dark as ever, I agree with the Tool refs. Needs a Vox that has its upper end and lower end quashed , just give that mid-range with a slight overdrive. Always a pleasure mate! Interesting ending. Fav'd
ValveDriver
ValveDriver replied 14th Sep 2024 - 5 months ago
I'm not a fan of Locusts either. Or cicadas. Noisy ass bastards. That's kind of why I made this. This is the heart of Cicada season, and that's all I hear, all the time. I'm looking really freakin' forward to the end of summer, (among many other reasons), when they go the fuck away. Crickets can join 'em, too.
I think I know what you mean about the vocals. If what I'm imagining what you're trying to convey, that would sound good. Kind of like singing through a megaphone sound?
Contrary to my last tracks message, I've been toying with the idea of feeding my voice into one of those AI voice things to lay down on some of my tracks. It's just a matter of finding a good one that isn't going to cost me an arm and a leg in subscription fees, or free ones that don't absolutely suck. We'll see I guess.
Take care, Steve.

Bro, IDK wat to even say except omfg. Sick shit. I do hear Tool a little bit, but do u remember the band Helmet? The riffs remind me of them a bit too. I agree with Dime, metal is underrepresented here. But ur representing in spades. Some of my fav stuff I've found here in recent memory has been yours. I really wish I could find the CDs I made with the band I was in years (centuries?) ago just to show it to u, man. I straight up love your work, u won't have to convince me to check out whatever u upload, thats for sure. Thanks for sharing Aaron. - The other Aaron

I do remember Helmet. At least, I remember there was a band called Helmet. I know I've heard them, but I can't for the life of me, without looking them up, remember what they sound like. I know they had a couple big songs.
I'm honored to know that you like my work enough to deem it as some of your favorites here. That in itself is encouraging. So, thank you for that!
If you do find that CD, you'll have to upload some. I'd love to hear it.

I would like to use vocals. But unfortunately, my voice just isn't what it used to be back in the day, and what I hear in my head when making this isn't something that just anyone can do. But, if anyone ever does come along that can do it, I will definitely cut a new edit and re-upload it.

It's funny you mentioned Tool, (it is a compliment, btw.), I've always liked them, but I never thought, "I want to sound like that." It just kind of happened. I suppose after 30 something years of listening to a band, it's going to filter in at some point, huh?
Thanks again, man. I truly appreciate it!

I couldn't help but continue with a few more comments on this bro. You know how we always liked to dig deeper into the recording sides of these things. Is this a combined live and virtual guitar? You killed it with the drums and bass here and I was really happy to hear the synth even though it was sparse. This really charged me up bro, so stoked to see another track from you. The older stuff is/was great but there is definite polish here man. Whatever sauce you applied, its tangy, and I dig it! Who knows you just might have inspired ol' Neo to dust off the cob webs! Stay tuned.

ValveDriver replied 2nd Sep 2024 - 5 months ago
Fuckin' do it man!! I would LOVE to hear some new Neomorphus here! That and these new kids need a taste of what made this site what it is!
I'm happy to hear that the drums and bass were good. Those were always parts I had trouble getting more creative with. Especially the drums. The bass does have the "One of These Days" sound to it. It wasn't intentional, but when Pink Floyd is sustenance beyond music, that's gonna happen.
The guitar is all Shreddage 2 & 3. The bass is NI's Rickenbacker. Our Mr. Cunningham once said, years ago, in a comment somewhere that VST gutiars are good for accents, or back up, but they can't be used as the main instrument. To a degree, he's absolutely correct. But, none the less, I took that as a challenge! That, and my Warlock has some wiring issues that leave it unplayable at the moment.
Thank you for listening, man. I always greatly appreciate your opinion and feedback.
Take care, brother.

I have to say this came as quite a nice surprise on an otherwise boring Sunday afternoon. Honestly I have had recent thoughts of the time when we were among the current group of music makers here. And the thought did cross my mind if the ValveDriver might still have inclinations to pour out a little more of his soul for us. I'm happy to now know the answer.
This track put a smile on my face quickly with just those first few notes sounding a tad similar to Pink Floyds "One of These Days" from the Meddle album. Of course this track takes a distinctly different path. It became immediately apparent that the bass line was going to play an important role and here again Pink Floyd-esque. This build up section is not only notable but so very integral to the overall track. Such tasty heavy rhythm ensues as it progresses into the groove, you've really polished your chops and changeups. Love the wah usage! Not enough space here but, Thx Aaron, U made my day bro!

That's the cool thing about FL studio, you can easily make your own loops, and then use them as needed, or tweak them individually. By the time I'm done with one of these metal songs, my playlist looks like somebody had a confetti party all over it with all the little notes, and drum hits, and this-n-thats in the loops.
Thank you again, Rita.

Metal is under represented on here. I agree completely. I started listening to metal in sometime around 1985. Back when it was still in it's infancy. Everyone always said, "you'll grow out of it." The joke's on them! Here it is almost 40 years later and I still love it just as much as day one!
I'm glad you liked the song even though it's not exactly your preferred genre. Thanks for taking the time to listen to it, brother. As always, I appreciate the comment as well.

Description : I discovered Meshuggah around 2003 and was blown away by the power, complexity and super Heavy sound of their music. Their "Nothing" album marked the switch to 8 string guitars and pushed Heavy Metal into a whole new territory. My track is a variant cover of their song "Nebulous". I have stayed pretty close to the original but added a few dynamic elements of my own. Its loud, its super heavy and way out there...Beyond Nebulous.

Description : This unconventional metal track is dedicated to Valvedriver https://www.looperman.com/users/profile/841435 though it's not a parody of his fine music or me actively trying to sound like it. I struggled for months with the first few minutes of this track knowing that I must be able to take it somewhere deeper, more psychedelic and powerful. Then I loaded some sampled choir voice instruments, as used in my track Reckful https://www.looperman.com/tracks/detail/160356 and suddenly found myself happily in Valveland - not a place I visit often. Feeling amply Valvedriven and newly inspired, I added the last few minutes fairly easily and very quickly. So: it's a twisting, turning mixture of grunge, menacing ambient, mystical metal and ultra-heavy funk. Instruments: electric guitar+bass, synth basses, female choir voices, one synth pad, some other synths on the nastier side of things and a few programmed heavy acoustic drumkits playing a mixture of triplets and straighter grooves. Interesting thoughts appreciated. Favourite bits? Shit bits? Please listen on good headphones/speakers as there's a lot of heavy bass in this. Now get ready to rock: balls out, hands in the air and with rebellious joy in your heart. Just try not to headbang the hell out of your laptop. Go!
