Description : I recorded this song using reason along with live guitars and vocal and a few harmonies. A lot of people think of techno electronica when they hear "reason" because of it's capabilities but I prefer to get a "real band" sound as much as possible. I played most of the parts on my Roland keyboard and used the redrum program for drums. I like the way it turned out. Now if I only had the skills and gear for a professional mastering.....

Hello Killtone,
This is the first time I have reviewed one of your songs. I happened to catch it as a 'featured track' and thank goodness for that.
I like the song a lot, and I liked the music instruments chosen.
Your voice is nice too. I have Reason, but never use it as it came with my Pro Tools I use.
The drums sound 'live' as I always like that rather than the canned synth type drums which remind me of the Energizer bunny! :-).
So I think you suceeded in making your song sound live. I do the same as much as I can. Sometimes it sounds like your right there in the room.
Good Job.
Oh...as for 'Mastering', a fellow here in my hometown does Mastering for approx. $20 a song. He has his own large old Heath -Allen analog console for recording live bands, and doesn't care for digital that much still, but uses it for mastering. So you might want to check around in your area and just see what it would cost if you want to go that route.
If you do it, ask them excatly how, and what they had to do and maybe you can learn from that, and do it yourself next time. See if you can stay in the studio and watch them! Usually takes 1/2 to 1 hour at most.
I believe here, he uses Sound Forges' audio analysers tools?

Good song. I cant tell if it reminds me of some early 80's songs or if it reminds me of someone like The Ocean Blue. But if you have me thinking that deep you caught my attention. Its a good song. This is hard song to pull off and I think youve done pretty damb good a doing just that.
It is. Nice track. I like the melody and real band sound. I find that one of the toughest things to do, specially since I don't play live very much. Bringing the lyrics up a bit will be good. I'd like to hear more of them on this track. 2 Thumbs up.
Thanks for listening and your mixing comments. I've heard that before so I did tweek up the vocals a bit. It's funny I always say the same thing, I want to hear everybody's vocals up front except my own.
hey, that's a real nice song!!!!
tight playing, good guitar solo .....
about the mixing: you should set the vocals to the middle of the mix, they are panned out a little too much for my flavour ....
anyway, I like this track!!!
great work, man ....
Hey...
real nice job!
when I work I find myself focussed on three areas...
Composition: I think the melody themes and vocal and instrumental are very good...one thought is that the song goes on too long with too much repetition (I always struggle with that) try to keep my attention as a good pop rock song should.
Recording/production: I think any "hobbyist" always has a steep learning curve with the software...its one thing to have all these great ideas but another challenge to actually get them into the project as you want and imagined. I think you have done a good job...also one of my goals is to use Reason4 to stretch beyond the typical electronic/techno we usually hear produced and to get a good rock sound out...I use Cubase SX to record guitars and vocals and dump into Reason with NNXT or Rex Recycle....curious how you did yours???
Mastering...ah yes, the make or break point! always a struggle! On your song one suggestion is to bring the vocals out to the top and front...not to overpower but to clarify...right not they are a little lost. back off instruments during vocals and back up during solos etc...I am a novice and am finding that there is a lot of written material out there about EQ, limiting. maximizing mastering etc...I'm finding that like most tasks there are some tried and true "tricks of the trade"...might be good for you to research some of this stuff if you haven't already....
overall I like it and am impressed and encourage you to keep up the good work....
Hey thanks for taking the time and giving such a thoughtful review. I think your review was on the money. I think I'm going to be tweeking and editing the song a bit more. When I'm done with the midi files in reason I convert them to wave files and bring everything into Sony vegas for audio recording and further mixing. I seem to have a bit of a latency problem when I import audio files into reason. I don't have any problems turning them into wave files or even when I'm recording, only when I import audio, so I never do it. Thanks again, Kevin

Description : This is my newest creation, at a stage very near to completion. No third-party mastering or mixing, as with all my tracks. Just have to fix a few tiny things. I FINALLY WAS ABLE TO MIX EVERYTHING IN THE SAME SESSION. This song has all human-played instruments - no quantization or MIDI! My brother does all the vocals except for the interlude part, which I do. My other brother plays the rhythm guitar (a Gibson Les Paul Custom - only one of 12 in the world!!) and I play the accompanying guitar (a Johnny Mar Jag and PRS). He has a lot of guitars :P A good friend of ours, Ronnie, plays the bass and another friend, Freddie, plays the drums. The drum track was done in one take (had to use an electric drum set due to time constraints - but acoustic kits are so much better). Overall, pretty satisfied with the result. Let me know your thoughts.
Description : Feel free to check out the lyrics video on YT as well :) This is a new track based on the great vocals by Ashes and Dreams! Again, a mix of electronic/progressive/rock, any feedback is welcome
Description : The first track I sing on. Cheap stage mic & no fancy plugins. Heavily guitar laden to the point it's got a bit of a shoegaze thing going on. I pulled the lyrics out of my ass & yes, they're a bit silly.
Description : BIG UPDATE 26/02/2014 - So, this was an 18 min track that I have now successfully split in two. 2nd half I uploaded a few weeks ago (Things That Should Always Be, with the bouncy 2 min reggae intro). This is the first half, which has a new mix, a mega chill, meditative ending and a little jazz thrown in for good measure. Takes a few minutes for beat to really kick in. Constantly evolving electric guitar, bass guitar, acoustic drums and lead banjo driven by fat, busy 80BPM grooves with a bit of a reggae and shuffle feel. Also: synth choir voices, dulcimer, violin, cello, shimmering pads. Builds up gradually to nice and rocking and then gets taken back down for the big comedown chill. I really don't know what sort of genre this is except 'far out'. I think it sounds more like a live band than one guy playing instruments and manipulating a DAW. Not my best track but a bit of blissful, sunny island fun. Real positive vibe here so I hope you give it a chance to unfold and unfurl. Sit back, clear your schedule and immerse yourself in these trippy sonic experiments cooked up deep in my off-planet underground laboratory. I have to send the MP3 to Earth via space courier (not cheap).
Description : This track was like the inhale after an exhale of aggressive industrial-electro-sludge tracks that I had put out that summer and fall. This was the more reserved, and introspective winter track. It's nothing spectacular, but I still really enjoy it. I hope you do too. Take care. V.
Description : when i was a kid you could go down and buy acid drops at the dairy - sour boiled sweets....vox, guitars and keys by me. Bass a LM loop by megapaul.
