on LEAVING MOTOWN by Planetjazzbass
Yo.

Nice jam(erson) you have going here.

Totally illegal sample to kick things off but I let you off. And then it's not motown at all. Is it?

Steady little, gentle, subdued groove with some predictably fuky bass and lead stabby keys. And even a bit of cowbell.

0:36 that's really not a Motown vibe. No glitchy, twinkly stuff in that sort of music. There's no I Heard It Through The Glitchline. But it's cool twinkly stuff.

1:44 surprise brass stab that seems a bit disconnected from everything else. Too dry, too close.

1:50 that's some weird sax. Kind of cool, squawking away like that. Brass stab probably now doesn't need to be there.

Then a tasteful key change and some muted trumpet that seems to belong more in the mix than the other brass. Good stuff. Played by you from the keyboard?

3:34 some wicked trumpet runs there! Very soulful stuff.

And a disappointing fadeout end before we head back to the naughty sample.

Overall: a cool vibe but I think some improvements can be made.

Hey Static thanks for taking the time to listen....actually I expected a similar reaction to this piece as you've given, my whole aim here was an analogous take on JJ's life and not an actual motown style, having said that your comments are nonetheless accurate from your point of view obviously. My approach is tangential, no illegal sampling here! lol and I'd successfully defend that in a court of law (if they actually exist) the listener is encouraged to imagine walking past a radio or studio hallway and briefly hearing a snippet of the music he was involved with, follow on the tune describes JJ's early career where things seemed twinkling and great, then an attitude of disgruntlement, lack of recognition and alcohol abuse ensued (horns) leading to his eventual untimely death (47) illuminated somewhat with the recognition of his contributions (flugel horn passage)...a conceptual piece bracketed by illegal sampling! lol and yes there's always room for improvement. brass vst's can be tricky...cheers mate I always like your reviews as their coming from an honest musician. Dave :)

Hi Dave! I really enjoyed listenig to this one. Super marching bassline, a little bit of guitar lines are great as well. Sometimes linear, melodic; sometimes somehow comping in a jazzier convention. Very hard and clean-out drumming.

Section from 2:39 sounds very much like a repetition of first section using different instruments only. Both sections are in the same mood, to me. Hard to explain - maybe I expected something more positive after hearing nature on the intro...

A really melancholic mood/mode of this song but so very nicely produced! Sounds very powerful. Very fine piano playing too!

Best to you, Alex

Hey Alex thanks for the kind review mate!..originally I had this track slated for some spoken word and rap over the top of it but that connection fell through, I guess that's why it retains that funeral march type vibe...I'm working on some more quasi HipHop type material at the moment which promises to be a lot more optimistic in it's outlook. haha...I can see the scales on the piano but I lack the fluidity that ingrained practice provides, that's why you'll hear me using stabs a lot! lol...all the best Dave :)

Love this piece. Lot of great music and tasty guitar packed in to this track. The sax jumped out at me with a happy yelp of surprise. I like the subterranean vocals going on. And the fade to rain at the end is way cool. Excellent work.

Posted a while ago but new to me. With a title like that and a penile shape to the soundwave, well the sound did not disappoint the expectations thus created. A funky, nasty guitar and sax amalgam that lives up to its engorged namesake. Good shit.

Very much enjoyed this song my friend! You bass is one fantastic sound to behold, a bit like I'm seeing it. I am not familiar with the TV series you mentioned, as I have not had cable in twenty years. I try to keep most of my viewing back about five years or more. Drugs are an odd subject, and it gets more muddled by the day. With the pharmaceutical and medical industries being one of the main guiding forces in the US, I honestly just assume that everyone I meet is on drugs. Then there is addiction, which is a word which seems to suggest "drugs" to most people. I try to see the addiction as separate, since many people can get addicted to almost anything... shopping, television, eating, exercising, pain, pleasure, and whatever you can think of. When it all comes down to it, addiction is a neurochemical reaction in an organ of the body, the brain. Most people who get off of drugs will quickly replace them with some other addiction. An addiction to anything can be disastrous, and it can also have the same effect on personality and behavior. Life as we know it would be completely alien if addiction did not exist, since it is common to all creatures on earth... I would wager that it is the largest driving factor in this industrialized, media driven life we know now. I've been watching a few episodes of "Hoarders" again, and I think this is a great example of what I'm talking about. It is pretty uncommon when drugs are even mentioned in the show, however these people are definitely addicts. I will be the first to admit that I love a good neurotransmitter cocktail, how I get it varies from day to day, and season to season... I suppose one could say that I am addicted to living. Sorry for rambling here... I guess I found very little to say about the song itself, because I know that you know it's AMAZING. There seems to be little argument about that, from reading the comments. A "signature" seems to come naturally in your work. Excellent song! Fave!

Hey Pat thanks for dropping by mate!...I think Dali said it best "I don't take drugs, I am the drug!"... I tend agree with your point of view though I think the term obsessive compulsive behaviour fits better in some instances more than addiction, you have an obsessive compulsive personality ..so do I, in fact it's imperative that anyone who wants to hone their skills adopt this behaviour, too many people confuse obsessive compulsive with obsessive compulsive disorder, as in people that become hoarders...jeez come to think of it you can never have enough guitars! lol, it's a pity that this condition manifests all too often with money....I used to take drugs occasionally back in the day (purely social interactions) but these days I'm addicted to life just like you..cheers mate Dave :)

Yo.

This is some good shit.

0:21 and that first note is cool. Nice guitar playing and the reggae is strong and rather retro. Drums right back in the mix. I'd prefer them more forward, to bring the groove out, but I understand that choice.

1:18-1:25 there may be a bit of clash between the bass and guitar as they're both rather active. It's good bass variety, all the same.

1:33 saxy sound that's rather authentic even though I suspect it's not a real one.

1:58 good strange, emphatic noise.

2:08 nice, subtle guitar.

I still want the drums to be more prominent but they're not and that's your choice.

3:25 good vocal screamy stuff a little reminiscent of Floyd's The Great Gig In The Sky.

I'm not that keen on the windy, rainy ending but it's not bad. I'm not keen on fadeouts in general and prefer something more definitive to round things off.

This is some very authentic retro reggae that no one would know was made by one guy playing everything at a computer. So congrats on capturing that classic reggae essence and adding some additional, worldly "ethnic" flavour.

Hey Static thanks for dropping by man (mon)...I did place the drums back in the mix a little by design, more often than not the drum program (EZyDrummer) does a reasonable job but on this occasion it didn't quite have the exact spot on feel I was looking for even after I'd manipulated the rim shots etc. That's a Ciaramella an Italian member of the Oboe family you can hear, I'm always looking for different instruments to try....Your totally correct on the fade outs, I don't always use them but it is pure laziness when you come right down to it.."oh the song needs to end lets just fade it", jeez I've done that so often guilty as charged, you've put me on notice and I'll endeavour to do proper endings in the future....thanks again for your insightful review mate!..cheers Dave :)

Very thankful for this tune, since I hear it from the point of view of one of those specks of "dust." It's uplifting in all of the right ways, and gets me past all the BS quickly. The song made me wish I had been enjoying a glass pipe instead of my tobacco pipe, I'll just have to download it for later! Like someone mentioned, the bass sounded well intonated! Been fashioning a rosewood bridge for a guitar in the last couple of days, so I guess my mind is just on that sort of thing. This very much has a vintage reggae feel to me, and that is always a welcome surprise (one we don't get very often lately). Your performances were awesome! The vocal thing being a VST really surprised me, and considering it had pitch work done, it sounded quite good! Very fun to hear this one, and I will Fave and DL. Thanks for sharing it!

Hey Pat...glad you liked the tune mate, I took various parts of the vocal samples mainly the ending phrases and combined them with a little pitch correcting, man I wish I could sing it would make things way better (trouble is the only times I ever sung was when I was drunk and I gave up drinking ages ago, I need to get over my hangups and try it sober maybe! lol), good to hear your making instruments mate as you know it's so very satisfying getting hands on with your music in a literal sense as artistically...all the best mate cheers Dave :)

I am putting together a radio stream in memory of my late son who died from cystic fibrosis and would very much like to use this track. He was into dub, house, reggae, trip hop and many things electronic. The stream, sonnypieradio.com will be ad free, and will not pay royalties, however I am happy to give you a credit and links. Really dig this one Dave. Brings back some memories of hanging with a few old band members and checking out different guitar music. I was never much into Reggae but one of the guys was always trying to get us to do some and was always playing us tunes from Marley, Dennis Brown, Mikey Dread and others. This undoubtedly has a fair amount of Jazz flavoring which I really enjoyed. Such a pleasant groove all the way through. Great listen , great track.

shit this is my first comment on a reggae song. Thankfully its a dope piece of music so i dont mind lending a few words to the cause. Very unique styling with the guitar. Feels very organic and has obviously been put together with much emotion and artistry. Feels like it could benefit from a lil bit of repetition as strange as that might sound. I got a lil bit lost in the various switch ups and vocal sections. But very enjoyable and very different. strong work

Hey Flonut, thanks for the listen man very much appreciated!... I guess this track being essentially an instrumental in my eyes enabled me to act chromatically within it's structure something I quite often do, however I get what your saying and if it had of been constructed with a dedicated vocal presence I definitely would have steered the bias in that direction and not taken so free range approach...thanks again mate! cheers Dave :)

Yeah this is great. Really like this old style reggae mixed with the ethno and jazzy things. The sound is really well and the same can be said to the play skill.
This was a pleasure to listen to. I bet that this one is something where a talented singer could do some nice vocals on.

A really good reggae song.

stay tuned

I know now why you changed your avatar, you have dreadlocks and they haven't quite grown out yet!! Well done Dave, has the feel of some authentic roots reggae. Mix is tight, as usual and I did like the creative intro. Mixed down to an album? ;)

The corporate machine can't stop musicians from writing about their unscrupulous practices and not giving the worker a fair shake. I always liked the Clash for writing songs like Clampdown as it is about the corporations and their control over workers. It seems like it keeps getting worse and now in my country we have the same type of businessman as president elect. Say goodbye to more of my rights and benefits as a citizen. Bastards!! Now I'm wound up,lol.

Always a pleasure, take care!

Sweet. Just nicely tasteful reggae style from the late sixties early seventies sound. I used to go to a reggae night back in the day back in the states and watch this band do covers. There version of ¨Hey Joe¨ kicked ass, and the lead singer could also play a soprano and an alto sax at the same time. quite a feat. What I love about this is the bass work is awesome. The first part of the phrase is traditional reggae and you end the second part of the phrase with scalar jazz, brilliant composition. I did not realize you released a tune with the word Dread in it as I put out an ambient tune called Dread, But ever since Halloween we have been on a mental simpatico that is a bit spooky. My song was about the dread people might be feeling after the US election. Your dread song is much more uplifting and musically equates some hope. Congrats on another great piece of work Dave.

Hey Steve thanks mate!..same track names different inflections, haha when I hear the word dread it's always pronounced with a Rastafarian lilt, no wot I'm talkin about mun (accompanied by sound of big spliff getting lit up in background)....it's kind of sad that Dubstep has replaced what used to be occupied by reggae but that's life, a cousin of mine recently spent two years working in the Seychelles and sent me heaps and heaps of their local music which is very reggae based but way more pop oriented, sort of reggae without the ganja! lol...ah me no partake of de erb dees dayz mun doze rastas wud tink I'ma crazy mon mun!...cheers mate Dave :)

Great example of Less Is More. As a constant violator, I need to learn from this. Your instrumentation is always pretty exposed and what it should be,... recorded properly. These tones are not "fix it in the mix" tones. Sure, some eq and other touches, but this hasn't been manhandled and bastardized by radical eq. Sounds very natural, organic. Something I've yet to achieve. Good stuff, indeed.

Take care.
