Your music is awesome, but is very very busy for the train beat. The way you introduced the beat is great, but the drum beat that comes in matches it, but doesn't enhance it in any way [very plain, generic]. Try to find something a little deeper that would create a stronger groove [hip hop maybe]. The keyboards are way too busy for this beat and is over powering it. Maybe towards the end of the song introduce it, after the groove is firmly established, start with small pieces. Even if you just introduced it with a 1/4, then half, none, then full.
Anyways, in no way am I saying it sounds bad, that is just the direction I would go with it.
Thanks for your feedback. Its great to hear when other people like my work. I haven't been on or editing in nearly a year, but hope to be back at making music (and editing track like this one based on the feedback I've received.) I built this one from scratch and made my own loops... after awhile, things can get lost in sound. I'm listening to track now and can hear the edits you suggested.
...I was going to listen to some your work, but it seems your list of music is a bit short. I hope to hear some of your stuff sometime.
Thanks again.
i don't think you should really change anything for this track - the production, melody - all is in place really. mastering skills is something we should always progress on ))
I appreciate your comments on this piece. I think Night Train is a little short though, but at the same time, the structure of it doesn't really lend itself to being repeated too long. I ran into a similar hurdle with 'better judgment', and managed to make it longer - although it too has some areas open for improvement. I have an ear infection right now - happy times - so my hearing is abit rubbish, and I have not done any work on my music nor commented on others - including yours. Give me some time and I'll listen to more of your music - last I listened to was Sunlit blvd... (great piece.) It just wouldn't be right to comment when I can't hear much at all. lol
Thanks again!
Boost 11 a simple filter? Hmmm. It should be a compressor that actively seeks out individual frequency ranges and compresses where needed to boost the overall volume of a track or tracks. It's certainly not a cureall, but more of a "final touch" in order to get individual sounds to be more "in front".
Ozone 4 in Italian? I know these guys are out of Boston - if you've got a legit copy I'm sure they'll help you out. I haven't upgraded to 4 yet, but 3 has a variety of pre-sets that allow you to really change the overall "sound of the sound".
Keep at it!
Yeah, I'm was just starting to pick up some distinctions on the various effect on Acid Pro... I'm also just coming down with an ear infection. lol. All track mastering is off for the time being. As for Boost.. yeah, it was not at all what I thought it would, although it does make the intolerable more tolerable, but does not do the individual tracks any justice.
So for the time being, I can spend some extra time on reading up on mastering.
There are some really interesting approaches. I like to have the song move around, not just move left to right - any ideas?
Ozone 4 appeared to be kinda cool, but as I mentioned, the demo that I downloaded from the Ozone 4 site (www.izotope.com). izotope has a few plugins that I'm interested in, but my computer is stressing even with Ozone 4... so much that I had to uninstall the demo. (Maybe my 2002 Compaq laptop doesn't understand Italian?)lol.
Dude, that is one f'd up avatar. lol. That's what happens when you only listen to one of the instrumentals on my track-list - the transformation is not complete. Listen to the rest and you'll be alright.
Thanks for the review!
it gives the feeling of train - that's for sure
but... it's so dark that i can see the picture of train heading straight out of this world into some darker and distant place. it made me shiver - it's in a way scary and bears some uncomfortable feeling you can't easy forget. so i suppose that's what you wanted to achieve - and you've done it! production and melodies are great apart from that!
byb, thanks for the review. Its still a work in progress, although I've shelved it for awhile so I can work on improving my mastering skills - which are pretty limited right now.
I'm not promising to implement them, but what changes would you suggest?
Q? Is there a sequence that I should use to approach mastering? Also, Acid gives Db's, Gain & Volume per track, and I haven't figured out how each attribute affects each track.
Hey sounds like I just stepped into the wilderness...not surprising after reading your Bio...Mushing must be brilliant..I'm an old ski bum so I can dig the pull of the snow country...Getting back to business...the track's elements are great....one thing I'd start to do with big soundscapes like this is start to manipulate and separate the sounds more using different reverbs..I like to think of the tune in a three dimensional aspect..things can be moved forward and back left and right....given the different reverb types available it's worth experimenting..and any bass percussion can be compressed big time to add more punch.....great work..a huge canvas your using!..cheers planet :)
Planet, thanks for the review. Its great to be reviewed by somebody who puts out the quality music that you do.
Mushing is fantastic. Although they are wound up and high strung, the dogs are a peaceful and soothing to spend time with... hours of silence as the sled glides through the snow, watching trees, beaver, caribou and miles of endless winterland pass me by... music always comes into my mind, and sometimes I remember it by the time I get back to my cabin. I can only record as long as the battery in my laptop will allow, before firing up the generator and drowning out all silence.
I'll look into more soundscapes. Reverb and other audio tuning is certainly my weakness right now. Exploring existing loops and making my own and structuring the music sequence has kept me from the mastering end. Kurt pointed out that I was neglecting that... he made a good point. So now I'm learning to apply these effects...
I applied Boost 11 to the master volume of every one of the tracks that I have put out, and while they're tolerable, they have lost the punch and definition that I had put in initially.
Your three dimensional approach is a great idea.
I'll see what I can do on this canvass... right now its a bit of a Jackson Pollock.
Hi Robby
Nice track def a fusion track. Kinda cinematic\ethnic sorta sound
But i do think Kurt has hit the nail on the head there when he talks about using some plugins to even things out a bit.
i have quite a few of the free plugins from voxego myself they are really good and I just throw them in and experiment with them
and see what things sound like cause I just do everything by ear myself.
What I do quite a lot is drop effects or compression onto the master track and see what things sound like I dont know if that is the right way to go about things but its worked for me sometimes, especially with the amount of percussion sounds I use.
Anyway nice track Robby
Regards
Krook
Kurts recommendations were mint! I went and ordered Boost 11 to and got a trial for Ozone 4, only to discover that these plugin's are hammering my antique laptop to death... at least Ozone is. Boost doesn't even show up... perhaps a new laptop is in order... :S
I will employ your techniques as well. I've tried abit already, but the changes are so subtle that I am not sure they are even happening. lol. Acid has a few inhouse plugins already, but I haven't been able to notice what's happening, if anything is at all.
You and Kurt both have been very helpful. Much appreciated!
I like this one - I even like the name. I was thinking that Stimulus would be a good band name!
What software are you using? Things sound a little "individual" to me - not enough of a "band" sound, too many isolated sounds.
(And, yes, I KNOW that's how it came about - I do the same thing!)
I use a couple of plugins that help with making things sound a little more unified. One of them is Ozone 3 from iZotope. Another is VariSaturator from Voxengo. Basically, they're both able to apply compression within frequency ranges so that things don't "stick out" too much in terms of either volume or frequency.
I use Sonar from Cakewalk as my main recording tool - and there are thousands of plugins for all sorts of effects.
I like this piece - although I'm not too sure about the goofy laugh!
Kurt, I'm using Acid Pro 6.0... well, not really 'using it' just yet, but learning.
Plugins... I got Ozone 4 and Boost 11. It seems that Boost is just a simple filter. Ozone came in Italian??? Since my Italian skills are only marginally more diminished than my mastering skills (at best), I did not make use of Ozone.
Maybe later... I do know that Boost is not the tool that will produce the results I'm looking for. Not a good use of $50. lol.
Groovy. The keyboard lines seem to alternately invoke horror movies and calliopes, which go together somehow. The timbre on some of the percussion is really rich. Well, that goes for all the tracks, nice textures. The bassline reminds me of Herb Alpert's "Rise," but with that spooky high note that puts it on a different plane. And of course the title quote is made pretty spooky by the harmonic context. Unheimlich.
Hello
I can tell why this is one of your favorites, this is a real good tune.Im listening at work with just a pair of laptop headphones and It all sounds pretty good to me a bit distortion at the beginning but I will have another listen in the studio tonight I will email you again later
Nice tune bud

If you're listening with earphones, you're probably hearing what I'm hearing. Thing is, for some reason, in Acid, its not so grungy... its like any song gains some distortion when I convert it to MP3. I'm sure there's some sort of finishing work I could do at this end, but I don't know what... any ideas? ScottBurright mentioned messing with the master and adjusting the dB's... as is, they're all below 0...
I'll go back at it tonight. This one I want to get right.
Cheers!
Very solid backing tracks and awesome scratching. Wish I knew how to do this. Very cool sounds and chord accompaniment.
The only bad thing is that like most tracks I hear on LM, this one's mixed too hot, so I'm hearing a lot of distortion. Digital clipping sounds like a blown speaker. If you pull the Master level back so that the meter never reads above 0 db, this will go away.
Otherwise perfect. If you re-render it at a lower level, I'm putting it in my rotation. :)
Scott, thanks for taking the time to give me your opinion. Really appreciate it.
I hear you on the distortion and clipping. I'll do what I can to clean it up, but I'm working with some old tech - 2001 Presario laptop. No studio like environment - just the Northern forests of Canada.
I like this track but I think it could do with some more breaks in it or some vox here and there just to break it up a bit.
Some cool sounds though and I did enjoy it.
Regards
Krook
Krook, thanks for that. I'll see if I can work some breaks and vox into it, in place of some transitions. Any spots in particular where you'd suggest to break it up?
it sounds kinda like intro.
hm.. the loops go to dirty. I mean it's like there is too much loop things mix together or something and it become to noise some.
KTK, thanks for the feedback...
I was messing around with trying to clean up the track and f'd it all up (even more) and so no changes yet.
What plugin do you recommend to sort out the reverb?
Cheers

The track is good really. But the mastering needs much work. I suggest you use headphones and a/b them with your speakers. Helps a lot
