Farid, first let me say thank you for introducing all of us to this marvelous instrument. It has a beautiful sound, especially in the hands of an expert :). Like Ed said, it is amazing that this was recorded on a webcam microphone....but also shows that you don't need a bunch of fancy equipment to make a great recording.

Really well done!!! Keep making beautiful music. I hope all is well.

Hi Farid....It is a pleasure to hear a different instrument performed with feeling and skill...I think emotions of the heart and talent always produce the finest music...The setar is new to western ears but I know it has been around a very long time...it`s sound is a bit like an instrument we call a dulcimer (used often in traditional north american acoustic music...country, bluegrass, etc)...It surprises me that this was recorded with a webcam microphone as it sounds nice and clear....Well done my friend...I am sure your lady will be happy with you...Ed

Hi Farid,
Thanks for sharing this with us: the "setar" is an instrument that we don't happen to hear often.
I find this instruments has a very "sad" sound.
Peace, Domenico

It's really refreshing to hear a track sounding absolutely live, which is real rarity here and more so when it features a less known instrument. It was a pleasure to listen! Thx!

Hi Farid, my dear friend .
I "jumped" on this when I saw its name ;)
Though I'm not used to listen to / and don't know much about setar, I can figure out how difficult it is to play this beautiful instrument . I love these harmonies I'm discovering through your track which "breathes" a lot through pauses and more impetuous moments . My spirit travelled far away while listening and I thank you for that trip .
Hope you're doing well,
Mibousamat to you and your closest ones,
Take care, my friend .

FaridHumanoid replied 15th Jan 2014 - 11 years ago
Hi dear Carole.
"Jumped" such a kindness from you ;)
Happy to see you like it.
I believe all of instrumentals are difficult to play, u know? we play "Setar" just by one finger's nail.
It is full of pauses and impetuous moments as you said, actually I was too depressed when I played it and just wanna to record and don't care anything at those moment.

Hey - no problem. If you have a look at my comment history, I almost always give a decent analysis of a track, with exact time references and I try to make suggestions for how I think it can be improved (occasionally I don't have any suggestions). I only comment on tracks I either really like or think are good but could be better.

I love music very deeply so it's easy for me to write out some thoughts on a piece of music. And I could easily make my comments longer. I don't understand what the point is of people giving one sentence reviews/comments such as "I like it" or "This is really good". That's not helpful or interesting, though maybe it makes the person who made the track feel a little bit better.

Anyway, I thought your track was good but perhaps has too many different sections in it. Maybe you could split it in two and then extend those sections into their own tracks. I don't know really know - I'm just making suggestions based on my feelings. You may completely disagree! Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Some classic evil riffs here. I guess you must be in a low, dropped tuning (I always play in drop D but it's DADF#AD - my blues slide tuning) and maybe it's a 7 string guitar.

The little ambient breaks are strange but give the track a certain character.

1:43 I wasn't so keen on that tom break. Thought they should have been playing double time. Maybe get some double bass drum in there too.

2:55 I think you can make that guitar more powerful - EQ, stereo widening - things like that.

3:24 the lead part that comes in is strange. Quite ambient, maybe it's a guitar. Sounds a little like a piano but it's probably not. Also weird synth stuff in there.

Oh, I just noticed this is all loops. It's definitely a collection of ideas, doesn't really have any obvious structure.

Last section, starting 4:31 is probably my favourite. Quite dreamy with that main sad guitar part. Good soundtrack music. I'd probably rather have that last section taken out and turned into a whole piece on its own.

I also like the very final sample on 5:53.

Oh hell yes!!!! This is what Looperman has been lacking. I've been looking for the heavy stuff on here, then I saw that you are a friend of Behnam and Tonality. You are now a friend of mine. I love what you do. The changes are refreshing, though not very consistent in volume, energy and clarity. The ending it just great. Thank you for this.
