Great track brother! I love the "hooky" beat and melodies, and the well placed, but not overused, vocal sample. Great production and excellent mixing. Peace and love, Six
Wow, lot of punch to that track...and again some very unusual choices in terms of melody. Very cool. And very clean playing. I wish that I could think in these sort of off key type of themes, but somehow I always need some kind of resolution. I love weirdness though and this track is oozing it. Awesome. Peace, Six
Wow that was certainly a very unusual listen, not in a bad way though. Just so different melodically it's hard to wrap my mind around it. Haha. The guitar sounds great, but you might want to consider dropping it in the mix a little bit to get a more balanced track. As a guitarist myself I have a damn hard time doing this, but it's a move that almost always improves the overall quality of the piece. Nice clean playing and super imaginative in choices. Reminds me a bit of a Robert Fripp/Brian Eno kind of thing. Nice. Peace, Six
Hey, thanks mate... Yeah, It was the first time I ever properly tried to mix anything, so it was a bit of a learning curve. And a guitarist almost never wants to drop the guitar levels! Haha. Thanks for the kind words Six.
Great groove and great tones on the guitar. What are you recording with again? The sounds are wonderfully crisp and present. As always, I totally enjoyed this engaging and fun listen. Your friend rips nicely by the way. Peace, Six
Hello Mr. Six,
Thanks for taking the time to listen and review one of my humble songs. Not sure what you meant by recording with what? Instruments or Software, so I'll explain them both a little.
As for the software, I am using and learning as I go...Pro Tools 7.4. with a MBOX 2 Pro as the sound card interface,( a Firewire unit) and a Glyph GT 050 Q external hard drive as my totally dedicated audio hard drive. I record everything in Stereo!
(Also I use a Dell XPS M-1710 Laptop holding the main PT program).
Everything I play, or use as loops, goes thru that program/interface. All effects, and instruments.... and eventually vocals.
I have a variety of instruments here at home. At present, I own 9 electric guitars which include several Fender Telecasters, A Fender Strat, A Fender Strat Electric 12 string, 2 inexpensive acoustic guitars, (Yamaha and Johnson)
a newly aquired Dobro, and a '72 Framus electric (a Les Paul copy).
Also a Fender Precision Bass.
I have here and play, an Emmonds Double Neck 10 string Pedal Steel, a 5 string Banjo, and all other worldly and unworldy sounds come from a Korg Karma Workstation keyboard which also doubles as my MIDI input as needed.
My Instruments all plug directly into the 'MBox'.
If you'd like to see a picture of them all, I'd be glad to send you one.
Now... not bragging here, just that I have accumulated these instruments over time as I am 'old', and I learned to play them all over time as needed, when I was playing in my band, which was basically Country-Rock music.
Okay...hope this info helps, any suggestions you may have on how I can improve my music is appreciated. I do plan on taking one of my songs to a recording studio down the road here and have it 'Mastered' just to see what the difference would be with someone elses ears. Then maybe I can get a better 'full sound' like you hear on the radio.
Okay...thanks again for the review. I'll tell my friend you liked the song as well.
Randy
A good audio atmosphere established, but I feel like it should go somewhere. That's just my take. This would make an excellent interlude and/or intro to an upbeat song. It's well put together and does a great job establishing and holding on to a vibe. Peace, Six
I like this track a lot...I laughed my ass off thinking about the hours of my life that I burned playing this game when it first came out. I like the backing track, but it would have been nice to hear some of the background melodies just a little more in the mix. Overall though it's a fun listen. Peace, Six
Definitely some good build-up and unusual sounds. I would have liked for this piece to have gone somewhere with that built up energy. I like the vibe that comes off but I feel like it should go to a place with a little more power. As a musician, I realize that this is a lot easier to say than actually do! The production quality is very good and please consider that what I say is highly subjective and not meant to offend or belittle. Just sharing my point of view. I can't wait to hear what you get going when you get your own instrumentation involved in the mix. Peace, Six
This is the 4th of your tracks that I have listened to and so far it is the one that I like the most. It is ambient and atmospheric and weird. All descriptions of stuff that I enjoy. Such a weird melody, I think the way that the melody mixes in and out of tune and key is great! Sets up some really creative transitions. Great track. Peace, Six
I can totally hear this at some Euro club. Pretty cool groove for just messing around. The production sound is very solid. Good mix. Again not m the style of my personal taste, but that's what I love about looperman, the exposure to things that I would normally not hear. I really liked the crazy pitch shifts in the middle of the piece. Well done. Peace, Six
I like the minimalist style of this track. Electronic music is not really my style, but this track had a throwback kind of sound that I got into. Reminds me a little of some of the electronic Floyd stuff. Very nicely done. Peace, Six
This is a very beautiful track and I think that your subdued playing adds some great flavor. High quality results are the norm and expectation and you have easily achieved that goal. I really enjoyed this listen. When are we gonna do something together? Peace, Six
Great laid back groove. I like the melodic motif you have developed here. And of course the bass sounds rich and wonderful. Fantastic team up. Peace, Six
Hi six, thanks for taking the time to stop by and leave such positive comments. If you need more stuff from me for our pending collaboration, just give me a nudge, cheers Slap...
Very cool track musically speaking. The sequencing is very good and sets a great mood. The sax is overwhelming in the mix. It needs a little space to breath, a little reverb and/or a very, very light chorus would do wonders to give it some real life. Just drop the volume in the mix a little bit and you will see an incredible difference. Also consider a fade out at the end, that will help make it less abrupt and chopped sounding. But these are all technical comments. From a pure musical point of view this is a great track! Good work. Peace, Six
One thing that I appreciate about all your tracks is that you develop melodic statements. Some of this style of music is so repetitive it hurts, but when you incorporate some variance in what is being heard, even when only minor, it adds so much flavor to the piece. I have always had a soft spot for the synth and I really like the sounds you have put together here. Everything is balanced and has a place in the mix and the levels all sound good. Each passage segues nicely into the other and they all build toward the climax. Well done. Peace, Six
Man I dig this a lot. Good lyrics and solid singing. I agree with DV that the vocals need some room to breathe. A little Reverb ought to fix that right up. The vocals definitely make this track a lot more interesting. Good work. Now just blend them in with the rest of the track and you are gonna have something pretty cool going on. Peace and Love, Six
I've done a couple of more takes on the vocals. And still not satisfied yet. About to pull my PA upstairs so I can get reverb that I like. I like the concept bot your right I need to get it tighter and some decent effects on the vocals. Some delay might work too.
Thanks.
Blair
I like this for the fact that it is completely different from your other stuff. I mean in every way! It's pretty cool in a funky way, although not anything that I would listen to outside looperman. That said, I really admire the way you are trying something different. I could not make a track like this. Not one that was any good anyway...haha. Very cool. Peace, Six
Planet weirdness....I love it! What a crazy track...It sounds like the levels are a little bit high, but man I am way into the funky sounds. Not bad for an old ass man...haha. Also what better inspiration than Apocolypse Now? You sir are one totally unique individual. Peace, Six
Add On: By the way thanks for that connection. It looks as though it will work out well for me. We shall see of course, but I trust you. Especially now that you are a superstar. Haha. Thanks again.
Hehe....Yeah this tracks a bit rough around the edges..it was recorded on my Zoom MRS 1266..before I switched to computer based recording....it's still a handy machine if I have to do something semi portable.....but trying to edit and navigate on a screen the size of a cigarette pack is difficult.....Glad you got connected mate...I'll be interested to see the impact it has on your work...onward and upward!...it's a safe journey...well this old dog's going to sign off..haha...you don't know how amusing that is to me....literally yesterday I was 25...cheers planet:)
This track has an "almost there" kind of quality to it. Like it is so close to being a phenominal pro cut. As it is, I like the melodies and the ramshackle sort of feel to it. Very cool piece of music. I like when the little tapping lead comes in. It's done differently and not your typical shred type of thing. Peace, Six
I like the sound of this track, I would probably call it cinematic over classical, but maybe that's just me. The mix sounds a little rough as I can hear some clipping in the instrumentation. Good emotional content though and definitely a very enjoyable and moving listen. Peace, Six
Takes some guts to upload something like this. Good for you. Peace, Six
Add On: Just so we are clear, that is a positive comment. I am not trying to put you down or anything. I really do admire your willingness to post what is a very well known piece of music. I am pretty accomplished and I am not sure even I would do that, so cheers to you my man. =) Sounds pretty good too. Peace, Six
Love the playing and feel on this track. Super laid back and funky in a Steely Dan kind of way. Great production, all the sounds fit right where they should. Love this track. Peace, Six
Cool song with some very solid playing on it. Although the playing is good, some of the production lacks clarity. Stuff that should punch through sounds a little murky. Good jamming piece though. Peace, Six
Little bit of ZZ Top vocals coming through the lowering of the vocals. The playing is sharp as always and pretty damn authentic. I wonder is there something you can do to the acoustic guitar track to make it a touch more gritty? It sounds very clean and somewhat out of place with the remainder of the track. Please consider that this is a hyper-critical observation as the track sounds wonderful as is. Just thinking about what might give is some more flavor. Peace, Six
Thanks Six,
You play the role as musician and advisor on Looperman that I like. I upload not only to read the compliments but I want to have comments that improve the song or recording. I focused on the experiment with the voice and not to the other tracks. Eventually the songs I upload to Looperman will be published on a new CD in 2010. So I am very glad with your comment. Exactly translated from Dutch we say in Holland" This man got some damned good ears on his head" Well you have.
Thanks again.
This track lacks some elements to make it really interesting, but it is a solid base with which to work. It cries out for a melody of some sort. I am loving the timbali, cowbell combination! Overall a good basic groove. Did you play the guitar parts on here?Peace, Six
