The melody to the verse parts kinda sound like some early 90s westcoast, Souls of Mischief stuff. I'm digging that and your drums hit hard, gritty like you said. Didn't really feel the sound of the hook, it just didn't seem to blend well (although it did a bit better the second time when you had a bridge after it). I wish I could offer a suggestion instead of just saying I didn't like that certain part but I can't.
This is definitely on the westcoast tip. It's got all the classic sound staples. What I like best is that you really incorporated many of the sounds from the evolution of the westcoast sound in here. The strings, the keys, the staccato bassline at the beginning, that muted bassline you added, the funk guitar and that synthetic cowbell hit (a legendary westcoast hit if there ever was one). Real nicely done, Mos. You made it do what it do. Props.
Love how you flipped this sample. Great job on that. I love the flowy, bouncy feel of this and the way the track builds is great, a testament to your solid arrangements. Ear candy mos def.
I like this. The changes in the track are subtle but it remains quite detail-oriented. The sounds give off the imagery of a slow car drive down the street. Nicely done.
Your description of the track really reflected how this made me feel. In spite of the sense of calm your sounds produced, I couldn't help but feel as if something bad was bound to happen. The fact that no intense sounds busted out towards the end or anywhere made me feel like I was lucky to escape intact. Great ambiance in this.
A masterclass on electronic music and the art of groove, this is. The multiple key tracks sound great and that bass makes me wanna say "you're a mean one, Mr Grinch". This won't make any sense to you at all but it sounds like the musical version of my thought process when designing blueprints and models for school. I'm gonna listen to this while I work on my graduate project. Inspiring.
I haven't even thought of a Halloween costume yet but after listening to this, I say screw Halloween. I'm ready for Christmas now. You two are just amazing. Rambo, Ivan Drago, hell...even President Ahmadenijad would shed a tear hearing this. Virtuoso work by both of you. You rode the balance of sticking to the concept without making it boring and making the song yours without bastardizing it. Amazing. Amazing. Amazing.
I love how you used different drumlines to segue the melody changes in this. I got a sense of water flowing in a river listening to this. The drums were like rocks and your sax and flute were the water that moved around them without ever moving apart from them.
Recognized some of these loops you used...great job with them. As P_C said, a great blend of styles and sounds.
I would like to use some more descriptive words to tell you about how this track came across to me, but all I can say (besides it sounding great) is that it reminded me of a really great night out I had a couple of weekends ago. Thanks for the flashback, man. Cheers.
I really like your use of flange and phasing (or at least it sounds like flange and phasing) at the beginning to lead into the track. You have an excellent sense for bringing in and taking out the right elements at the right time which gives the track a great sense of continuity as it changes throughout.
On some kind of implicit level, I kind of did get a sense of dark pervading this track. But your sounds were like neon laser beams that ripped through the darkness until there wasn't much of it left. I love how this made me feel. Thanks for sharing.
Real nice melodies here. That warm bassline is sick and acquits itself nicely with the upbeat flav here. The string instrument you brought in seems a bit overpowering and if you'd like, I think it might be worth exploring different instruments (the melody is more than fine though).
As for plugging instruments into FL7...I think it's a matter of whether your soundcard has the proper inputs to accept an auxiliary or line-in instrument...I think.
Great job of bringing in plenty of different elements and making them work. Would've loved to see those sections stretch out a little before you brought it back but then I guess the song would be like 10+ minutes long...lol. Either way, this is solid workmanship on your part. Kudos.
Choppin up porno...tried and true and never fails to please. Straightforward and maybe a bit repetitive but this is right up my alley. Diggin this. Props.
Solid arrangements. You built this track up perfectly and it's got a real busy groove to it, hard not to move to this. The energy hits you like a punch to the chin when your mouth is open. I wish I didn't blow out my headphones yesterday.
Do you use a Mac? If so, I just gotta say you did a sick job with those samples. Your ear for putting them together into one coherent piece was on full display here. This is mcnasty filth.
wow thanks man, yeah I'm kinda Mac geek, but kinda need to be for my job - It's surprising how much time I put into searching for loops to fit where and what I want, sometimes it can be a chore...but now and then pays off. Are you working Mac based? if so what program do you use? I find ther aren't a whole lot of Mac based programs - Logic & Reason I think...
I gotta admit, I can't really comment on the grime aesthetics because I don't much about grime. But I do know Minnie Ripperton and I love what you did with this. It's always a risk trying your hand at a classic but you pulled it off well, sir. The tempo and arrangements on the drums were great and that melody really fit the soothing tones of Minnie's voice. Like the little freakout on the vox around the 3 minute mark too. Good track all around, man. Props.
Your sound is really slick, homeslice. You got good skills on the auto-tune. A lot of peeps sound awful with that thing because they don't know how to use it but you got it on lock.
The track itself is baaaaad, dude. It's got that 30 minutes left in the club, find you a girl and find you a ride home feel to it. Dope track, Fresco.
Yo, I'm feeling this, man. The piano is dope and I like the simplicity of the drums. Two tiny suggestions. Maybe add a less tuned-vocal behind the one you have now, something at a lower volume maybe to add a bit of clarity to it. Another is to maybe add some reverb to the clap so it's not as dry. However, if those are two elements you feel strongly about, there's no need to change it.
Are you gonna add vocals to this? Did you want someone to? I wouldn't mind giving it a shot if you want. This beat is blaze, dude. Props.
Actually I thought about adding a reverb on the clap, that is a good idea. I can't add any extra vocals, Fruity Loops is very limited on what I can do. I'm glad you like it though.
This is a disgusting track, man. Absolutely sick. It reminded of the good old days of throwing Red Light parties in my old place, everyone wearing animal masks and just bouncing off the walls.
Thanks for sharing this, homeslice. You just made me vividly relive a great point in time and I'm gonna be hardpressed to forget it (especially after downloading it...heh heh). The true mark of a genuinely moving track. Brilliant.
I kinda get the idea you were going for here. Around 2:30, when you dropped the beat, I got a feel for your drums and they definitely work. As far as synths and keys, I like what you did too...especially the bassline. But the melody is a bit fast. So combined with the fast hats, it all comes off a bit cluttered. If you slowed the melody down somewhat over that 2:30 style drumwork, this would sound disgusting. I like where you took this though. Thanks for sharing it. Peace.
I really like how fleshed out this track is. Countless elements at play but you did a great job of finding the right place for all of them to shine in their own individual context, as well as that of the whole. The happy vibe of this is infectious and I love your use of the drum crash here. It adds a good contrast.
thank you very much Jack....this was more than a simple review but also very detailed information about how the different elements reach the listener
cheers,Rob
You really know how to tell a story through a track. The beginning really sounded like the backdrop for a moving speech before battle. The drums came in rapidly and I could really feel the march going on. At around 2 minutes, you brought in that panicky/urgent synth that just made me hear bullets whizzing and stopping with a thud, leaving soldiers bleeding like a tree oozes sap. At three minutes, the horn really set the tone for the aftermath of battle and the damage done.
Amazingly well done. Thanks for sharing this. Fav'd.
I'm with Mouko on this. This is a bad-ass track and if you just lower the levels on some of those samples you bring in, the clipping and fuzz should no longer mask your work. Gonna keep an eye out for your stuff from now on. Cheers.
