Hey Maj, this one is truly outstanding. One of my favorites of yours definitely. The mix of the really defined harmony, that moves in cool and interesting ways with the really sparse but percussive plucked strings and percussion hits gave it a very unique quality. Not like much I've heard recently. Well done!
Hey Maj, great stuff as ever. Could I ask, what synth sound did you use for the soloing you did over the entire track. I've started constantly hunting for cool synth sounds lol. The rhythmic energy it made with the scratchy note changes really added a lot of excitement.
Hey Cam.
Thanks mate.
Yes sure, The VST is Dune2 and the sound banks are Brute Sine RL with lots of manipulations.
I can send it to you if you wish.
Glad you like the track.
Maj
Hey Wayne, I love this song and you definitely did it justice! The arrangement is tight and snappy, like the Kinks original. Well played with your trademark, stripped-down, in-your-face production style. Also, I'm so happy you're continuing to experiment with theremin. It suited this song really well. Great stuff my man!
Hey Michael, this is great stuff. To my ear, SilverVixen is singing with a fair amount of jazz sensibility. Not sure if she has any training/experience in that genre. But in any case, taking what sounded like a jazz singer and moving them into a pop track created a really cool effect. And, as ever, the production was on-point. Great stuff sir!
I'll have to give this weird inspiration idea a try, see what I can come up with. I read that first and as soon as I hit play I thought "yeah, that's appropriate". I'm kinda curious what synth/patches you're using to create that dark glitchy sound, if you wouldn't mind sharing!
I try to find weird inspirations whether it's something from my day job or seeing something online.
I used good bit of stock FL plug-ins/VSTs like EQ, Reverb, distructor, and I used flex for one of the sounds because I got lazy and it sounded good.
Outside that serum and massive helped a lot with the official sound designs. It's a very simple process and shockingly there's not a lot of tutorials on how to do it.
I'm getting real Hans Zimmer vibes from your work here. Could 100 percent be the score to a major movie. Also feel a certain kindred spirit with the string ostinato we hear throughout the piece. Really cool stuff you've made here!
Hey Maj, I'm starting to think we live in the same musical neighbourhood! Great work with this one, a really chill but still gripping theme. The melody has echoes of 'Summertime' by George Gershwin in it. Nearly started singing along with it a couple of time.
Yikes man, so sorry to hear about your friend. One of my really close friends was diagnosed this year too actually and sitting by without being able to DO anything to help is so frustrating. Your care and concern for her really do shine through in this song. From what you've said above it sounds like you were trying to say something deeper and more impactful than just the words you sang in this song and you definitely succeeded. Well done!
Conviction is a really good word for that vocal sample, and you support it very well without overwhelming it. It can be a tricky balance to strike between making an interesting musical surface for a vocal to sit in without overwhelming it and you pulled that off really well here.
Hey Maj, splendid track as ever. Really nice chill groove that's helping me unwind. All of the elements are very well balanced and give each other a lot of space to breathe in the mix. Another well crafted piece!
Hey Cam.
Thank you very much, mate.
Glad you like it.
BTW, I did another piano track, if you want I can send it to you to see if you can add something to it to upload as a duet. Please let me know if you want to do it.
Thanks again.
Maj
Hey Chris, I'm getting to this one kinda late but well done sir! Genuinely, I think your tracks are some of the best produced on this site. That's no dishonour to anyone else of course. But every instrument voice is so pristine and well balanced, and there are so many transients moving through the stereo space that it kept my ears perked the whole time. Respect.
Hi Cam, really appreciate your comments thanks. I played the lead guitar with my fingernail, no pick. I was surprised how much it changed the tone. Gave it this sharp attack then a soft finish with some harmonics in places. Anyway, that's by the by. Cheers man, Chris.
Hey Maj... so I'm just finishing up a piano based track I was planning to post in the next few days. So... thanks for beating me to the punch, jerk! lol, just kidding. Actually, I heard the clipping that Wayne alluded to but I don't think you should take it out. The repeating arpeggios in the left hand give this piece a somewhat minimalist quality, which I'm a HUGE fan of. (See my profile deets if you don't believe me) And the aesthetic is really cool, almost as if we've slipped a mic into the home of a pianist who doesn't know anyone is listening. Incidentally, so the story goes, that's how the first track of Harold Budd's 'La Belle Vista' was recorded. Brain Eno turned on his recording gear while Budd was improvising and didn't even know he was there.
Ahh, Cam very sorry mate.
Had I known I wouldn't upload this track.
Maybe next time we do a duet piano track mate.
Thanks for looking in my friend.
Thank you very much, Merry Christmas and a Happy new year to you and all your loved ones.
Maj
Hey Rob, great to see you man! I never know what I'm going to get when I hit play on one of your tracks but this one turned out to be even more chaos than usual. The world will be a much darker place if ever that ceases to be the case.
As usual, the way that you deploy your vocal samples is absolutely on-point, as they create their own rhythmic effects. Which lines up with all the... honestly pretty hardcore... hard-bop jazz licks you tucked in throughout the mix. F*cking stellar.
Wow... Thanks Cam.
Once again your comments
on the rhythmic contribution the Vocals
add to my tracks makes me really think about
how I could push the Vocal rhythmic envelope even
more. I wasn't really aware of it until you mentioned
it a while back on another one of my tracks.
Thank you for bringing it to my attention, it has added
a whole nuther layer of things to consider when I write.
I'll be posting some new stuff soon. You can bet your insight on the rhythmic Vocals will be in there.
Oh d*mn, ok I loved that electronic piano hook at the beginning, that was so tasty and the bass-drive/distortion you added was utterly perfect. This track shares a great quality of most of your stuff in that, to my ear, it almost feels like a tour of various instrumental sounds, each unique and adding it's own flavour to the whole before stepping back to let another shine. It gives a unique quality to your music from a songwriting perspective as well as a production one. I don't think you need to develop this one any further unless you really want to. But trust your instincts, they're razor sharp!
Cam, greetings. You already know how I feel about that EP. Thanks for taking time out for this listen. It is good to know that you found the instruments balanced out just right. I appreciate your feedback as always. Be safe.
Hey Mark! Realized I needed to stop in and check out your latest creation. At this point it goes without saying that your production will be flawless, the drums will be banging and the whole thing will flow like nobody's business. The vocals are a wonderful addition to your usual soundworld, I'm looking forward to hearing how you develop that going forward. (I'm a bit biased of course lol)
When I was listening, the flute kinda stole the show in my opinion. Almost sounded a bit like Ian Anderson. But in particular I wanted to mention the somewhat ambient intro and outro, they gave the song a sense of cohesion and really tied the whole thing together. Great stuff as ever my friend! Hope all is well with you and yours.
Cam, it's always an honor for your stop through. Your continued support is greatly appreciated. I'm going through an about every 3-month cycle with some new VST instruments and effects plugins. That alone is the inspiration to keep pushing forward with different ideas. The feedback here is especially appreciated, as this one with the vocals was a step out of my norm. It's good you found this listen to your liking. Have an awesome and safe week, and I'll catch you on the next round.
Hey man, very cool stuff. I'm not sure what future bass is exactly. But listening to this track I was very surprised by how sophisticated your harmonic choices were. There were a number of a non-diatonic chords placed together in a really natural and organic sounding way. I love harmony and it's always fun to hear things that I didn't expect. Great stuff!
All I did was split the last chord into three. take 2nd edition of the chord, place it -1 semitone, take the third edition and place it a whole tone down. Kind just scratched my head for an hour and a half trying to make the last part more "interesting"
Hey Wayne, really enjoyed this one. The theremin tracks kinda took me by surprise, it was a few seconds before I was sure what I was hearing. But they compliment your usual style/instrumentation very well. A nice, pure counterpart to the hairy electric sound. I'd encourage you to explore this sound further, I think you're on to something. And of course, the lyrics are always good. It was fun to get away to sunny California from the drab and rainy Pacific Northwest for a couple minutes!
I bought a Moog Theremini theremin and have been experimenting with it in my music. Fun to play and it gives me some interesting sounds. I also like how it interacts with the guitar, like an organ with one sound and an ocarina almost with the other.
I've never been to California, seems like it would be nice to visit. We are starting our 7 months of nice weather here in florida after 2 hurricanes.
Tolles Zeug mein herr! Wish I spoke more German lol, hope that was correct. Anyway I admire your text setting in this song, there's a lot of lyrics and you make them sound very natural. I'll probably need to listen a few more times to make sure I understand all of them.
I thought these lyrics sounded vaguely familiar, then I read the Dylan attribution and it all made sense. But this was a really, really cool way to re-contextualize lyrics from a bygone age. With the guitar at 1:18 and 3:38 still paying tribute to their origins. Not to mention your delivery which had a similarly old-school power to it. As usual your synth and electronic effects were on-point and mixed beautifully. So this song gave me a real sense of the old and the new. Hope this doesn't all sound too w*nky or abstract lol.
Hi Cam, nah I'm very happy it prompted you to think about such things, and that you took the time and effort to communicate it. You pretty much hit the nail on the head. I wrote most of the lyrics for the verses, then I figured Dylan's lyrics kind of fit the context and meaning of my own. I've always loved the words of that Dylan song, and play/sing it on the acoustic guitar. I guess you try to find meaning in Dylan's lyrics at your own peril, but to me, that song is all about the pagan Goddess or Earth Mother. So I ended up re-contexturalising Dylans words as you artfully say. Cheers, Chris
Oh d*mn! I thought I had this track pegged but that ending threw me a for a massive loop! I love the contrast between the chill, reverbed beats, clear synth licks and the simple but desperate growlings of the vocals. But that ending... man... that hit hard.
Well done lads! This sounds spacey as h*ll and I'm here for it. I wasn't entirely sure what would be meant by using the descriptor 'psychedelic' but now that I'm listening, it's completely appropriate. Your styles also compliment each other very well. Keep doing stuff together!
Hi Cam, oh yeah, you know, about the genre names... we (and I think a lot of others too) always have the same problem with that descriptor: you never totally fit into anything. We could have chosen "Fusion" but I hate that term...to me it always suggests a style of music I really don't want to be associated with. Then it's more "Psychedelic" ... that fits better and is far more authentic (at least in relation to me).
Thank you for listening and for your nice review,
Micky (also on behalf of Jynxz)
Hey Mark, I saw you comment on xstokes last track and I realized that I hadn't heard anything of yours in a while, glad to see there was a new one waiting for me! All the usual comments apply, really fun to listen to, jealous of your brass sampling (I'm working on mine, haven't gotten them there yet lol), mixed to perfection...
But this one was a really 'interesting' listen to me as well, particularly in the first minute or so. It reminded me of the early days of the jazz avant-garde, I heard a few things that struck me as choices Ornette Coleman might've made. Then as it proceeds and develops into a more traditional jazz piece, it's just chock full of tasty licks. Especially from the piano. D*mn! lol. When you're finished that album of yours I'd definitely like a copy please!
What's up Cam? I appreciate the stop thru. The points you mentioned are topics that could go on for hours. The Ornette Coleman mention is over the top. Interestingly enough Ornette is an accurate description of this weird place I'm in musically. Anyway, your support is super encouraging. Take it easy.
I tried listening and reading through the previous comments of this one at the same time. That turned out to be impossible lol. Really cool track man, I especially enjoyed the quiet intro actually. The way you bring different transients in and out of the convolution (at least I assume that's one of the things you were doing there lol) was incredibly delicate and very effective. You constantly kept me on my toes, I was never sure exactly where you would go from one moment to the next. Well done!
Very nice, very nice indeed. Simple, straightforward and jammy but I notice some subtle syncopation between the piano and e-piano that one might not notice initially. Great work.
