Description : This is the 6th track ( 15th mix with improved bass and sax reverbs mixed through a pair of Yamaha HS50M monitors and mastered inLogic) taken from the "Festival" album my son and I are recording for this years Edinburgh fringe festival which is in August. The idea is to showcase the music at the festival and sell the cd to the crowds of people who attend. We will be getting 1,000 cds professionally pressed and packaged, and fingers crossed we will sell the majority over the course of the 7 days we will be performing. Alexander is blowing a tenor sax on this track, with me dropping onto the alto.
This song is a dance/funk fusion number featuring a massive horn section ( two tenors, two altos, two soprano, one flute and a baritone ) with some monster harmonised riffs. Basses and guitars played by myself, with the drums looped from Logic....
All mix related comments welcome, plus the normal reviews which help me drive this thing forward.

Cheers, Slap...

it was at a faster tempo than I'd expected.. very joyus feeling funk. So, is that Alexander playing after that scratch and drop at 1:12? it's Impressively funky. I really was grinning the whole time. On the tech end I couldn't hear a single thing out of place, out of phase, too loud or too quiet.

still grinning,
Toby

The horn stabs are super tight and some great tones you both have going on in the solo's. My only comment like others have already said might be about nudging the bass up a touch.

Jamie.

Hey mate...if the horns were any crisper you'd have to put them in a plastic bag and market them!(SaxoCrisps/salt&vinegar flavour lol)...man I love this groove, the chord structure is so thick..the way you stack the stabs is unreal and you swing it with that baritone on the bars...every time I hear that beast it just hits your mid section.......There's one thing that surprises me,how did you ever get out of America?..if the pundits in Detroit,Chicago or wherever the hell the heart of Funk resides over there had of heard this, they would have chained you to a recording studio's door or made you George Clinton's right hand man!......Fuuuuuuunky stuff Men!..cheers Dave

Hi Dave, Horn crisps! I'm liking that idea... Maybe next year we could sell those to the people watching us at the Fringe lol...
I'm glad you're feeling the funkyness... The baritone is a great honk to add to a track, that rich bottom end always helps to beef up the sectionals. I think the bass needs to be up in the mix and a few have said which confirms it. I think a little more mix tweaks here and there are on the cards, but nothing heavy. George Clinton is one of the most groovy dudes on the planet, working for him would be an awesome dream come true..

Cheers, Slap...

Honestly, I'd like to hear that bass brought forward a bit, but that's my aesthetic (hey, you asked!).

A father and son collaboration...how cool is that? I dream of the day my daughters sit down to do some recording with me. Meanwhile, I do the elementary school drum club with my 12 year old weekly. Live jam, yeah it is the best!

This is happening Slap. It "feels" like a totally dialed in live set. And honestly, what can really be better than that?

Added to my list of favorites. Thanks for that!

Hi N0mad, I have to agree about the bass now it's been mentioned twice. Sitting on top of the song can be a hard place to hear those slight changes which make the thing really groove right. Drum club sounds like a great fun activity for all involved. I thank you for reviewing first and helping this track reach it's full sonic value.

Cheers, Slap...

Description : Continuing my journey with sampling. This was mostly an accident, and not where I originally thought it would go but I'm happy with the destination. I started with the track Real Reel Switcher by Eunice Russ Frost, which has a slower melancholy swing to it, however I've been playing a bunch of older video games lately, with SSX being in the mix heavily, so this track ended up taking on a bit of that for inspiration as well. Would love your thoughts.

Description : Updated 12/2/2022. This is an interesting redo of a funky and fun composition. I gave it more polish by switching to a different drum kit, swapped the flute solo for a synth, then infused more flavor into the guitars, bass and organ. Then lastly tweaking the final master. Can you tell the difference? Let me know. Enjoy.
