Description : A cover of the Judy Tzuke song (1979) and an amazing vocal performance by the very talented Pauline Wright. It's a real bass guitar and the acoustic solo towards the end is my trusty Ovation Celebrity. I have also doubled some lines with an electric where it gets a bit "celestial" and all the sting patches are from Logic X. Hope you like it and as always your comments much appreciated.

WOW...yes..Pauline is indeed one extra talented lady...and again, just because I often listen with my old producer ears I have to admire the way you composed around the vocal Richie,....I know I have said it before so it may sound old, but there is a very special talent to composition, performance and production that lets the vocal shine so well and yet has that ear candy type accompaniment and you can`t help notice....This is not flattery from me....its just damn good my friend...much respect.,...

It's always good to see you on my profile posting comments - thank you very much.
Pauline is a special talent and I am so fortunate to be working with her. I know we've had this conversation before regarding the whole issue of allowing the vocals to shine and it's good you mention it here again. It would be a crime to swamp a vocal performance of this calibre with unnecessary instrumentation or a poor mix. It's sometimes a case of not what you put in but what you leave out (wish I could credit myself with this advice but it was the great Count Basie that said it). So, what I include has to be the best I can achieve and I'm circumspect about adding anything that doesn't really add to the overall sounds. Apologies, I'm rambling a bit here!!!
Really good vocals. I'm not really into pop but least the vocals aren't auto tuned. Smooth relaxing vibes. A warm vibrant tune you got here. Great guitar work as well. Polished, peace
Thanks for posting such positive comments - much appreciated.
Yes, I am always knocked out with Pauline's vocals. It's an absolute pleasure to be working with such talent and auto tune isn't something we need (or want). Thanks for the comments on the guitar work too - that is very rewarding.
as I expected & as usual I heared another pleasurable music from your shared traX Richie dear , & many thnx for sharing this beautiful cover track & your collaboration with my insomnia .

Thanks for stopping by and posting comments and I'm so pleased you enjoyed listening the track. I will make sure I pass on your kind words to Pauline too - she will be knocked out.
Hey Richie..pristine production values on this song make it a pleasure to listen to,I can't imagine how you could improve on that vocal performance,superb!...I'm struggling to remember the original version by Judy Tzuke (which I'll be looking up shortly)but I have a strong feeling I'm going to prefer this version though!....I think a lot of people will listen to this track and be blown away by the professional continuity it displays, the dream of many home grown producers is to create material to this standard, not only are you setting a bench mark here your proving in the most literal way how the home based recording artist can crack that holy grail"studio" sound.Cool with a capital C,radio ready if I've ever heard it...encore and some serious applause mate!
Cheers Dave
Thank you so much for your comments. It really is so rewarding to hear your view of the production and I will be sure to pass on your kind words to Pauline. She is a gem!
I guess I have never lost the feeling that when in a little studio I'm like a kid in a sweetshop! In the early days of recording to tape, high noise floor, restricted signal to noise ration and cheap and noisy foot pedals for effects it was always a challenge trying to produce something you could hear above the tape hiss!! (you will remember those days I'm sure). The technology is so much better now but the challenge is still to produce the best you possibly can from the resources you have. If I am somewhere near "studio" sound I am really very pleased indeed.
I had a crush on Judie when I was about 14 and her 7" vinyl made a home with my punk/rock/ska collection at the time... and rightly so. It is full of emotion and depth. However, what a fantastic production you have come up with Richie and I reiterate that the young lady singing has hit the nail squarely on the head. If I were you, I would be as proud as punch. How much time did you spend producing this? What does it matter? It's top notch.
Thank you very much for rekindling the memories and pass my comments on to your vocalist.
Funny old thing that! I also had a crush on her too!! I think it was her photograph on the front cover of her album. Blonde hair and lovely teeth - ooooohhhhh! OK, glad you enjoyed the track and thank you so much for the kind words regarding the production. Much appreciated.
I spend a fair bit of time on the production and try to get everything as good as it possibly can be. Top notch - praise indeed, thanks.
I will of course pass on your comments to Pauline - she will be so pleased.
Thank you so much for the kind words - much appreciated. I agree with your comments on the vocals - Pauline is a class act. I'm so pleased you pick up on the quality of the sound too - very rewarding.
Enjoy your time on the dance floor in the arms of a loved one. Perfect!
Really nice production and I like this kind of recording with not too much processing added.
Sounds simply clear and pleasant to me.
Good arrangement and choose of instruments. Nice passage with strings in between leads to the final section. I like the guitar solo - it somehow fulfills the song. Nice backing vocals and suspended ending. .
Thank you so much for your kind words - much appreciated. It's so rewarding that you pick up on aspects of the track I try to get right. "Clear and pleasant" I like a lot!! It's a long time since I had a "good work" comment (in school I don't think I every had one!!!) so your comments are particularly special. Thank you so much.
Hi - what a track! So loveable.
Greetings to Pauline and her excellent voice!
Also enjoyed the airy feel of the music and just loved the outro with that guitar, simply outstanding. It's great to have real musicians here like you!!
Thank you so much for your comments - much appreciated. I will make sure I pass on your compliments and greetings to Pauline. She will be knocked out with your kind words. Glad you enjoyed the guitar solo too and I am extremely flattered you think I'm a "real musician". Very rewarding indeed.
Wow, this is really fantastic! Definitely one of your finer works if memory serves. I love the space in the mix, and the mixing of the instruments really shines with your signature! The track builds nicely toward the end as well. Can't fault anything really. Big fave!
Very many thanks for the kind words. Really great to have your view on the track and thanks for taking the time to post comments. I have to say I'm pretty pleased with the way it came out and excellent you picked up on the space in the mix. I really wanted an "empty" kind of atmosphere (if you check out the original it's very much transparent!).
Really a nice track Richie. Glad to see you are like me and not compressing the heck out of it and letting the music breath. I enjoyed hearing your tracks. Ovation sound really good.
Thanks for the kind words - very much appreciated. Again I find my Looper friends picking up on aspects of my productions I take some time and care about. Thank you. Compression and limiting I use sparingly and you are dead right, letting the music breathe is so important. Glad you liked the track and thanks again for stopping by.
Richie, I always know I am in for a major treat when I see you have a new song posted. In addition to your massive talents as a musician and producer/arranger, I think what sets you apart from us mere mortals is your attention to detail.
I've got no critique here, just massive amounts of respect for what you do - and how well you do it.
And Pauline isn't too shabby either, haha.
It's great to have you drop a new track my friend, downloaded (much appreciated) to listen to and enjoy again and again. I hope all is well.
Thank you so much for your kind words. It really is very rewarding to hear your view of my work and to pick up on aspects I take care and time on. There is a saying "It's all in the detail" and in that respect I guess I'm a subscriber!
Yes, Pauline is a massive talent with a huge heart and wonderful disposition. I am so lucky to be working with her not only in the studio but in a live band too. It doesn't get much better.
0:48 bass and drums are simple but effective. Nice, gentle ride. Could maybe have done with a little more drum variation and fills but it's OK going without in a track like this.
Strings' notes are nice. Their sound is OK. A little fake but not bad.
2:24 electric guitar adds a bit of grit. Again, her vocals are pretty damn faultless. Short Ovation solo is fine though I'm not that keen on its tone. Bit too bright.
Overall, good production and playing, with the vocals the obvious star.
I love simple and effective drums - thanks for picking up on that.
I agree, it's all too easy to overdo drum fills and variations. It's the song that's important and if I played live drums with the track they wouldn't be too different than the Superior Drummer parts I've put on.
Strings are so difficult to get exactly right and you're right - they do sound a little fake. Not surprising really - they are!!!
Oh no! I'm disappointed! You don't like the Ovation sound? Well it's the only decent acoustic I have so I'm not exactly spoilt for choice in this department. A bit bright? Maybe but you will well know recording acoustic instruments is never easy. I think it adds a nice contrast.
Thanks for the positive comments on the production and playing. It's clearly a little more difficult putting a song together without using loops and samples but hey, if it was easy . . . .
The vocal is the obvious star - we agree on that. So good to have someone of Pauline's calibre to collaborate with. She is equally good live too.
Cheers and thanks again for the informed perspective.
Well done Richie and Pauline! I am not familiar with the original so I have no expectations going into this. Wow! This is such a great pop track. There is a nice vibe here, you have created a peaceful easy feeling. Beautiful lyrics, the strings give it a classic pop feel. Excellent!!
Always good to hear your comments - so positive. Thank you. The original is worth a listen if only to hear the quality of the production (you can actually hear some tape hiss!) and it makes you realise how powerful DAWs have become in recent years. The vibe is quite close to the original too but Pauline's vocal is all her own. She is a great talent and wonderful to work with. Thanks again for stopping by and taking the time to post comments.
Nice track...Some very rich dynamics going on, in this tune...
I do find that you need an instrument, of some type moving
along her melody, just to reinforce some of the notes shes singing...
At times her voice got lost in the harmonic space, a synth or guitar
might work well...
As it stands it's a very good track...Solidly put together...
Thanks for the comments. We will have to agree to differ on the voice getting lost in the harmonic space (I'm not even sure if I fully understand the concept) but to my ears it sounds fine and does at least pay some respect to the original Judy Tzuke recording. Glad you picked up on the dynamics as I've tried to capture some sort of light and shade.
I never miss a click when I see a new one of yours. Another real beauty, instrumentally and vocally. Love the acoustic guitar towards the end. Great job!
Many thanks for stopping by and posting comments - much appreciated. Always good hear your view of the production and I am particularly pleased with your comments on the solo. Thank you.
You always know your gonna get something good on Richie Winns profile and this is no exception. Very professionally done working around those vocals. Pauline certainly can belt a tune out and your mixing skills have really brought it all to life. Dig that string section interlude and the guitar soloing as well. Crispy clean and done like a true pro.
