Description : So I've entered a worldwide songwriting contest with my brother and this is the instrumental to the song we're entering with. Everything was recorded, edited and mixed in Pro Tools 12 and done by yours truly. Would love to hear your thoughts on this one :) - Brado

No worries, SikNoiz, this is simply an instrumental mix/master. This will not be the same once the vocals are introduced. Already working on them as we speak :)
I enjoyed listening to this, despite it not being my listening preference. I thought the composition/writing was especially good, and I look forward to hearing it with vocals. I'm thinking that the mids and highs of those guitars will be in the way of the vocals as is, depending on the singer's range, but I'm sure that will be an easy fix. Other than that, I found this to have a good balance. Best wishes on the contest results!
Its obvious a lot of great work has gone into both the performance and the mix/production Brado...I can`t really think of any obvious to suggest (maybe I`m a biased listener as I like this kind of music ) the string part around 2:35 is fab..maybe it deserves a little more prominence. I think the vocals will influence any changes you may want to make but non seem obvious to me as it now stands..I`m guessing that the vocals may fight a little with the dominant high mids in the guitar tracks but you can always tweak them with a bit of eq/volume automation and throw in some mid-side processing if you need to further widen them out of the way...sounds good to me...good luck to you in the contest....Ed
I need to learn how to use M/S processing as I am still very basic in my knowledge of effects and compression. If you know of any particularly good videos that can help me improve in this area, feel free to send me a message!
I had a few runs listening to this song, first impression is damn I like this guitar sound, for some reason it reminded me of the layered sound on Boston tracks. It really has a very nice wide sound, perfect for a good vocal. I red all the comments by the others here, and I don't think I can add much more to it. All will depend on the singer, and obviously you will have to re-balance the song with the vocals again, and that will make everything sound slightly different. I hope you post it here, I would love to hear it! Cheers, TG
Thanks TG!! Appreciate the honest feedback. The way things are looking now, this song will sound very different in it's finalized stage :) Thanks for the listen!
Haha, we're entering two songs :) This one is most likely going to mine because he couldn't seem to find a good flow. I have some lyrics that should be making an appearance soon. :)
the more I listen the more I like this track, it says you have lyrics for it I would love to read them. For some reason when I hear it I think of oceans and Sea. Words come to me very easy listening to this track. I would really like to work with it.
I'm not a big listener of this sort of music, so I probably don't have much insight to offer.. however, I do feel the chorus could be beefed up a bit more with maybe a string section (I can even hear the melody in my head) I think it'd go really well!
I haven't read any of the other comments so you may have covered this already - but are you planning on laying vocals over this as well?
I actually agree with you on the strings, and they will come - but not until I add the vocals :) Glad you stopped by for a listen and appreciate the input!
Hi Brado
Fine piece of instrumental work so far! Everything is exactly the way it supposed to be. I assume drums are loops, or? (?) judging by comments below. I think for a songwriting contest the songwiting qualities matter the most, not really production or just instrumental. I might be wrong though. Can you reveal more about the competition you're entering?
You may always consider playing with the dynamic of the song more (I mean softer intro, longer outro etc.) because this sounds so very commercial and mainstream (therefore boring somehow, at least to me) - a little bit of dynamic variety would be nice, for example: dropping elements somewhere in the middle, a bit like in radio tunes labeled as Dance music. It depends of course on the lyrical structure and the actual message of the song.
Otherwise this is some really great material. Congratulations and good luck!
A.
I used Superior Drummer 2.0 for the drums, and I brought down the snare because it was a bit sharp, and I didn't want them to draw away from the vocals in the end-product. This is an easy fix, however, should it not sound as I intended, and will keep it in mind :) I agree with the dynamic issue, but I feel that to win in this contest I need to give them all I've got (with 18,000+ entries I've got to give them something to keep listening, to draw them in) within the first 30-40 seconds or they'll discard and move on. I learned about this when I traveled to Nashville. Maybe more towards the end, I will in fact change the dynamic. Thanks for the suggestions :)
This all sounds good and very clean and crisp. You're really very good at recording.
This is, as usual, your brand of melodic guitar-based music, but with some added, distorted balls coming in around 0:53. Nice guitar crunch there.
And then nicely back down into your verse.
Damn, I don't actually have that much to say about this. I'm trying but it's really well done so no obvious criticisms. It's a pretty perfect bed for vocals.
You should explain how you're doing the drums as they're great.
Sorry for the lack of suggestions but that's a good thing.
Some great vocals and you might even win the competition!
Thank you Static, always nice to hear from you :D I'm using Superior Drummer 2.0 for drums :P They save me all the trouble of mics!! :D We're speaking multi-million dollar studios and 1000+ dollar microphones, all put into a little 300 dollar package :D You already have EZDrummer (I think?) so you know how that goes :P I just treated it with some stereo widening and very slight compression.
man this is a really nice song and great mix. did you track the drumns with overhead and room mics? if so what kinda of proccessinbg do they have on them?
Sounds lush to me Brado.Oviously the vocal melody is the make or break at this level of creativity.Yes as said before maybe a harder snare to open up the chorus and I do feel a picked bass guitar with a more melodic movement through the chord changes could add to an already top backing track.Good luck,
Wow. This is a master piece. The drums sound so crisp and the guitars sound so clear. The loudness level is also perfect. Perfect Mix and perfect master.
Keep up the good work man!
All the best for your contest! :)
Damn, those guitars sound awesome. I should establish that this sounds great, then give you all the constructive criticism I can.
0:53 drums sound like there should be some kind of change in tone till 1:13, then they sound fitting again. Maybe more of a rim-shotted snare there? Or maybe another snare layered underneath, just barely noticeable.
By 2:45 the acoustic sounding guitar gets a bit old on the ears.
Yeah, there you go. As picky a bitch as I can be, that's all I can muster. That said, I have some serious tone envy going on here. I've NEVER captured a sound so clean and PROFESSIONAL sounding. Can't say it's hugely creative or new to the ears, sounds pretty Goo Goo Dolls, but holy crap is your recording good!
Thanks for the hard critique, Evisma :) I played a PRS Artist Blue Fade guitar, routed through a Mesa CabClone amp simulator and a DV Mark head for processing. I think you hit the Goo Goo Dolls sound on the head - I found that this song was a blend of several different of my favorite artists (Daughtry, Goo Goo Dolls, and Jeremy Camp) so you have a good ear :) Thanks for the critique!
These old Bose 2.5's from 1985 are sparkling tonight listening to this tune. Good luck with the contest. I want to hear vocals on this one as it would be amazing. I dub your genre of music New Americana. Sort of Country, sort of rock, but it expresses the American songbook of the youth as it applies to NOW.
Hello Brado,
If you could lower the main gain say by 6db then do a bounce to mp3 you should come to see what I was saying?
This by no means to doubt your capability as a competent producer this was my observation.
Jamid
I think you're referring to compression. If that is the case, I did want this sound because it makes the sounds "bigger." I know what you're referring to now and to me it sounds horridly empty when it's not up to this volume level. And no offense taken, friend. I see your point, was just wondering what you were referring to before :) Thanks again!
This sounds like a splendid entry to the contest! I can't find any particular flaws in it...on the contrary, I can
only admire the musical brilliance and stellar production !
No matter what I do with my ears I can't locate those supposed distortions Jamid is mentioning..) Instant 'fav'!
What standard could you make with Pro Tools? Just pro, of course...you did it but this time only in the quality of the mixing...the style (this kinda guitarish soft pop/rock is very popular) but these songs are only 'come and go' numbers for me if you know what I mean...anyways, vocs could give face for it, for sure and hope I/we will enjoy one of yours voice on it...
Ok, i think all sounds good, clear and well mixed stereo. The guitars have a nice sound and all in all it is a well made and mastered track.
But i wonder a bit about the harder parts in it. Cause i never heard you singing in that "hard rocking" style. :)
I enjoyed the listen and would be happy if i/we once get the chance to listen to the complete song with vocals on.
I don't know if it is a winner track cause i never know what people really wanna hear but for me it sounds like a very well made pop song. And i wish you both much success at the contest
Interested that you should say that jamid. I've listened to this track on several different stereo speakers and studio monitors and have not heard any distortion. Could you please reference a part of the track in which you think it occurs? Thanks for the input!

Description : This one has been sitting on my computer for a bit now but didn't really like it. My friends say it can use some vocals and I think that is what this one needs. It is Pop but also a bit country in here. Produced over a time frame of 2 Weeks at spring this year. Update: I did a remaster with some tubes in the chain.
Other than that, simply amazing!
I can't imagine you don't win.

And on that note, selfishly, if you're ever in the market for a singer / lyricist on a track I would kill to get my hands on something like this.
Again, wonderful stuff. Hope the contest goes well!

However, to me the gain is overcompensated a little and its bordering distortions.
Well done.
