Description : Importing Hungry Ghosts (shards of pot de tetes). My first seasonal Halloween track. Loops from planetjazzbass, bosonHavoc, and DJ4Real. Live MIDI recording with DSK Darkness Theory, and effected live kalimba (finger piano) track. The bass is a homemade kalimba made from an acoustic guitar (without neck) with keys made from a bamboo rake, played live as an overdub.
DRAFT 2: Edited down from 6:16 to 3:57. The foundation is now ready for spooky jungulified melody work!

DRAFT3: Added simulated fiddle melody in live recording. There's a tradition in W. Africa about the godji (monochord fiddle) being the sound that penetrates the spirit world and it seems fitting to add this kind of sound.

DRAFT4: Total revision of draft 3, but I kept the fiddle sounds via psychotropic circle and added "possession voices" via the same loop creator. Hopefully this is the terrifying version I'm looking for.

Play 2 now...

Uber nice vocal effects stuff near the end. As for the rest, it makes me think of what it'd be like to be messed up at a circus or county fair (less scary and more trippy). Skewed perspective of clowns, carnies, exotic animals, passing crowds of people, and the lights of the rides. Or even better, think of that one scene from the movie Dumbo when he gets drunk (and they sing Heffalumps & Woozles, I think). Course, that could just be me (oddball that I am). Def cool concept though (it'd fit in nicely with some film stuff). Lates!

SOUNDS MORE LIKE HORROR THAN SCARY LIKE YOUR EX-GRILFRIEND STANDING STANDING BY UR BED AS U SLEEP HORROR. GOOD USE OF SAMPLES TOO.

I almost posted this as Cinematic, but it doesn't really work for me like that. Lol - I've never had an ex standing by the bed while I'm sleeping, but it gives a good sense of things. Strange that we can invoke such states with musical noise. Thanks for the listen and review!

How did it happen that I missed this track before?!?This one is a masterpiece! When I first came across your music,I thought about your tracks as being like musical paintings, very evocative with a unique atmosphere, adding the different layers of soundscapes.
Faved it,of course,lol

Mon ami - "musical paintings" is truly what I'm doing, and I owe you thanks for bringing to my attention initially. Definitions can be really useful, no? It has let me take the license to continue this approach, and incredibly flattering that people actually dig it, too! Thank you for the fave!

I thought I had already reviewed this one but I only listened to it. Another piece that shakes my mind!! The beats you produce sound so incredible. Nice flow with the different changes and instruments.

In Buddhism, the hungry ghost is iconigraphically depicted as a being with a hugh, fat body, always wanting more and more, but his problem is that he has a tiny, tiny throat and cannot quench his impossible hunger for any or all things.

Sometimes it's good just to listen. I'd rather have a thoughtful review than otherwise. I'm glad you've explained the icon of the Hungry Ghost, as it's something I've never done with a description on this one. This is really a first for me: creating an intentional conceptual piece of music - "a Halloween song." It's also the first time I've played "live" overdubs while importing into Ableton. Learned a lot about latency issues (all resolvable), too. It's "Importing Hungry Ghosts" as I wanted to keep it within the sonic realm I'm doing (lot's of non-western instruments) and simultaneously make a nod at the historical moment (is art political by nature?). The Hungry Ghost, as metaphor or analogy of collective impulses is an important one. A bit like the current economic situation, no? Thanks for the review!

Hi n0mad

You are one talented guy, using the different loops and samples to get sounds that you dont hear much here on looperman, excellent track again, you have a fan here mate, brilliant, fav time again with this one too...

Thanks Estefano! This was really a lot of fun to do. Full on saturation of sound, but it's all clear enough that it'll do very strange things to your head on a deep listen. I really love how the two finger pianos recorded and what they added sonically and conceptually - I used a Sony clip on mic circa 1980 and dropped it into the body of each instrument. Thanks for the fave! Cheers.

Man, a fave from Slap is about as great a compliment as a person can get here! I was hoping you'd hear this one at some point, as it features my homemade finger piano as the bass. There's something about playing music on an instrument you've built that's rather special. So glad you dig this one. Cheers!

At first, I thought the shorter version would be enough for me to kind of "get it" as far as what the music is saying here, but I find myself replaying this to myself multiple times trying to get myself a good fix. I am a big fan of soundscapes in the experimental sense of the genre, and as there are some very organic "natural" sounds flooding the sense-field, I am also delighted by the syncoopated beats and synth that I hear, kind of exchanging time in the forefront with the organic stuff. I love it. The kids will certainly be hearing this coming out the speakers when they come by for candy this Halloween!
n0mad23
n0mad23 replied Unknown
You've got great listening skills and an ability to articulate that into written language, so this is a delightful review to receive. More and more I find myself really exploring soundscapes as a kind of emotional aggregate expression of visual representations. Is it possible to do the same with sound in terms of representation as in a painting painting? Can a soundscape "describe" a landscape? I think your observation on "exchanging" time here is the auditory equivalent of 3d representation on a 2d canvas, and I'm really encouraged that someone else "sees" it, too. Thanks for the listen and great review.

I love the variety of sounds you've used to build such an amazing soundscape... this really is a soundscape... it's like there's no escape! I like the unusual instruments you record with, and you have a talent for bringing for such strong sounds from them. Another amazing track!
n0mad23
n0mad23 replied Unknown
I keep trying to do sonic narratives, and in this sense the soundscape is the closest I've gotten. What's cool about this is that interpretation still rests in the audience, and ultimately each interpretation is slightly different. Reading all these reviews (11 in such a short time is incredibly flattering!) I'm struck with how each is truly grounded in the "text". The soundscape provides an interpretive ground, and nobody's hearing "happy blue dancing bunnies" or anything outside of its ground. This is cool and exciting to see. Thanks much mon ami le artiste - your perspective means a great deal to me.

I love this. When I pressed play i couldnt really stop listening to it. YOur title was extremely creative and its interesting because it fits this song. Its extremely mechanical. If i was alone in an old house at night and was listening to this id be frightened. Anyways i love this. It provides a ton of imagry. I imagined a bunch of ghosts on a conveyor belt coming back from the other side to finish unfinished business. Thats what i imagined anyways. Good job with this i enjoyed it a lot.
n0mad23
n0mad23 replied Unknown
Codymeiser - thanks for listening and reviewing this one. I'm really pleased you heard this as being "mechanical" as I was really trying to sonically portray the difference between corporeality (the organic) and non-corporeality (the hungry ghosts), and I think the mechanical aspect works for that representation. I'm super delighted that it created internal visuals for you and you found an interpretive ground in the title. Cheers mate!

aw man - love your titles. they really accentuate the track in the greatest of ways. they always give that perfect focus for the visuals in my head. nice work.

That DSK Darkness Theory is one that I just couldn't imagine ever using. I'm one that really doesn't like Horror Movies - period. I always feel a bit violated by the end of one and it's not entertaining to me. So this track is really quite a surprise personally on several fronts. It all began with an experiment importing a live kalimba recording that really reminded me of Balinese gamelan orchestra music. The leap to Hungry Ghosts happened immediately as it's specifically a Chinese mythology (extended out through much of Asia). I certainly approach my music visually, and it's what I can see in my mind's eye that I try to recreate sonically. The real joy to me is that this seems to translate and people like you "see" related visuals upon listening. I can't think of a higher form of compliment. Thanks so much!

I like how music strokes memory, and how a track will remind someone of something else. It's funny that with the limitations of sound that anything "original" happens at all. I hope you do post your track sometime, as I'd love to hear what this track reminds you of. Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers!

RawHead - thanks for the listen and review. I'm not familiar with either Goblin or the Suspiria soundtrack, so thanks for pointing me in that direction as well. Hey Sean...Bit of a tour de force happening here...some very cool sounds with great separation in the mix...you know, your having an influence on me..yesterday I bought a piezo pick-up online so I can attach it to all sorts of things and record them direct...all those kalimba type sounds are so cool!..I think this track is bridging the percussion barrier and showing how rhythms can become full blown orchestration in it's own right...I especially like the title, evocative yet totally illuminating..excellent work! cheers Dave :)

Dave - what I miss most about the old form is the inspiration that comes from direct contact with others. I'm beginning to realize that this form of contact/collaboration can work similarly, it's just a bit more difficult. I'd like to thank you personally for the multitude of loops I used from you in this piece. I actually had no idea until it was done and I gathered the list. I suspect it says a lot about yours and my own aesthetics and why we like each others approaches. I'm honored to occupy the same camp as The planetjazzbass! I think it's time for us to conspire on a combined effort track. Cheers, Sean.

An interesting one. After the the Timpani get going and the other drums come in, it almost sounds as if it were recorded from deep inside a grandfather clock. I guess the clock in my imagined scenario, is located inside a haunted mansion. A very evocative work and one that will give each listener a different set of imagery depending on their personal mindset - great stuff.
n0mad23
n0mad23 replied Unknown
jfw - yeah man, I like your description! I hadn't thought of the grandfather clock, but I was trying to impose something somewhat mechanical to distinguish the existence of hungry ghosts as no longer corporal or organic. The traces are there, but it's a different realm entirely. Now I'm really wondering what other imagery this invokes in the various listeners! Thanks for the listen and review!

Funny how stuff goes, isn't it? This actually began with an experiment importing a live kalimba track (the sounds at the end) and upon discovering that I could make my kalimba sound like Balinese gamelan set things off. One thing leading to another. Still, it was inspired and only took me a few days to arrange then a single sit down to a live recording. Glad you dig my Halloween weirdness!

Inspired by a track of Pseudoble. I was noodling along to his track "I wish I didn't know" (which is awesome) and had the words "Snow in Athens" in my head. This with the smooth jazz/fusion atmosphere led me to this track with a sort of Steely Dan feel.

Acoustic drum kits, fat basslines, soaring filtered strings, some strong Eastern elements (from guitar and strings), some dub and funk from the bass and drums and a bit of rocking electric guitar.
