Description : "The Joy in Little Things - (ode to a daughter's trumpet)". Final mastered mix. Recorded in Live as my first on the apc 40.

I got some new gear, and got an accidental sample of my eldest practicing her trumpet at the other side of the house. She was mortified that I had the recording, so I began manipulating it beyond recognition to ease her annoyance. With the new pre-amp and mic I sampled and created loops of my big baby dumbek and tablas. The melody is all manipulated trumpet loops. One loop from here and another from another royalty free loop site. Loop here is a percussion one from planetjazzbass.

V0.2 - shortened and mellowed things out. Tried to get tame the high frequencies and get a more psychedelic thing happening. Also worked on the bass drum to jack it into the zone of a driving bass. More revisions to come.

Final extended version - added additional drums including one from planetjazzbass to give more of that signature sound. Further refinement and manipulations of the trumpet rhythm and melody. First experiments with feedbacking send channels in Live as well.

Calling it done for now. I'll attempt a 3 minute or under version of this at some point, but need to move on.

Comments and criticisms welcome.

Not my kind of music but...I gotta say, well produced. I love the percussion tracks.

Good thing we've got such variety at our disposal. Not everything is for everyone. Yeah, I like the percussion here, too. Tempted to play some lead balalaika over the whole thing at some point, as I'm not totally satisfied with this one yet. Cheers.

I love it when true inspiration comes along. When it does, you know it. That's so sweet that you accidentally recorded your daughter playing her trumpet. I'm a trumpet player myself, so I can appreciate what you did with the horn sample. This is great stuff!

She's a natural (her music teacher thinks so, too) and it's really funny how shy and embarrassed she gets behind playing publicly. I'm a proud papa.

I love alividlife's "unconditional love" sound comment below. With all my exotic drums that were sampled, it's like I'm virtually jamming with my daughter. Inspiration reflected in the title. Glad you dig it!

I like this one a lot. It has the swirling ambience and cyclical rhythm of your "Dancing in the dreamtime" - both of which remind me of native American indian tribal dance music (minus the chanting). Thinking about it - the addition of some chanting (conservatively applied) might work on these type of pieces - at least it may be worth experimenting with...

Cheers, Jamie

Hi Jamie - I think I've finally let this one sit and gestate long enough to come back to it. I hadn't considered adding chants, but this has really got me thinking. Might be a great bridge for me in an attempt to "find my voice" again! I keep thinking that vocals are what I really need to infuse the human spirit into what I'm doing, so thanks for putting that idea into my head! Thanks much for the fave here - it's the compliment that inspires me to stretch out and try more!

Maura was sure hard to control! The look on her face! Hahaha.. But it turned out nicely! The tune is Under the Sea in The Little Mermaid, is it not? We were watching that scene over and over again. She is very good at it now don't you think?
Love the song!!!

No wonder I like that trumpet sample so much! It's based on Calypso music! That's probably exactly why the trumpet lent itself to this kind of manipulation, too. Glad you love this one, as I do too! Thanks for the review ShojoBeast!

Hey my friend

Mate loved reading the desciption lol, matey you always deliver with your tracks, man they never disappoint, very much a ethnic sounding, hypnotic feel to this one, sort of gives goosebumps, something about this piece is special but can not put my finger on it, all I can say that I am loving it, not wanting it to finish, again the finish product has your brilliant polish on it, something I have come to expect from your great works...Fav...Peace and massive respect my friend...Have a trancer up I thing you will like, based on Enigma sound, hope you enjoy...Estefano...

Sorry for the tardiness in response. Got totally sidetracked in my latest creation(s)! This one is still not quite right for me, but nearly there. I know what you mean about not being able to put a finger on why this works, but it does doesn't it? Some kind of subdued unbridled joy floating around in it or something. I think alividlife's "unconditional love" might be it, but what an abstract thing! Lol. Too bad there's not a Mystery genre, as this might fit the bill. Sure is cool monitoring our parallel development, isn't it mate? We can both pat ourselves on the back on how we've progressed in the last year. Cheers!

Sorry for my last comment about levels.. I guess Shan has apparently integrated a -6db filter on the player.. at least to my mixer's VU meter.
(Probably for good reason too!)

Anyway.. I really really love this one, because not only does it completely unabashedly sound like n0mad23, but it's also most definitely the more melodic of your tracks I have been lucky to witness.
I am gonna have to rack my brain and my library of your work, and see if I can't find that Accordian sample.. I swore you threw that on this?
no.. wait.. sigh
It's been awhile hasn't it?

ANYWAY, this track is awesome.. there's such joy and .. dare I say, unconditional love in it.. it's strange..
You illicit strange things older brother.

Man I gotta come up to Montesano and sleep on your couch lol.

FAVED.

No, the levels are lower than usual on my P. Gabriel remix, no doubt about it.

This one...I think I've finally had it on pause long enough. I thought I was done with this version, but.... The synchronicity is as I write this, my daughter's playing the song I sampled on her trumpet upstairs! I'm taking that as a definite sign!

I love your ears, or more specifically, those places in your brain where you process sonic things. I tried to articulate that in the title - a kind of poem contained in a single phrase - "The Joy in Little Things - ode to a daughter's trumpet." As my current project is Music to have a Rebellion To, I figure it's direly important to offer up solutions as well as create agitation. Let's not switch the power structure, rather let's reinvent it altogether. To me, finding it in friends and family is a key. Real wealth, the kind that can't be plugged into any economic formula comes from things like this. Unconditional love - the source of our word "friend," was "freond" which literally translates to "free love." Power beyond comprehension.

Even if you're the only one who hears it as you've described, I've achieved total success here. Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou.

The accordion bit is in "Hybridity - A Subversive Dance." The beginning's probably going to annoy you, but you'll dig that track. I know own the vocal source (Deepest India) so you can probably expect more Sufi singing in songs from me!

The couch is here little brother!

Hey Gord - I think you're on to something about the "Spirit" behind this one. I can see the remnant Celts or Persians digging this circa 1010 C.E., which makes me think it's jacked into the primal or primary roots of things. I've decided to come back to this one after finishing a couple other current projects and see if I can get a version that really satisfies me. Thanks for the kind review.

It has the nomad signature sound which always appeals to me and I certainly wasn't let down after listening. Was that the trumpet bellowing through the song as the main melody line, little distorted? Very cool!

Diggin' the groove to this. Deepman mentioned the length and lack of variation and I agree with him to some degree. I'm not saying the song goes downhill after 4 min but maybe there could be a trumpet break or solo where things settle for a bit and some slightly manipulated trumpet comes in(kinda like the ending). Ask your daughter to go "sachmo" for a few minutes and give you a a few lead snippets on the horn to play with!!
n0mad23
n0mad23 replied Unknown
I've tried (unsuccessfully) to bring trumpet phrases into this one, and so far they really aren't working with what's happening (to my ear). I think shortened, the variation issue won't be so significant, and if I can find a moment of big space here that will help too. Everything that's not drums here is actually my daughter's trumpet sample manipulated, which I think is really cool. Unexpected and sonically quite pleasant. My attempts at recording this have generally been 8 to 12 minutes long, and I was really annoyed at how long this version is - I had thought I'd got it down under 4 minutes this time. I think a few dry runs with the new controller I should get it down to a satisfying length. Glad you here the signature sound! To me, it's a lot like the early Jungulator stuff I was doing, though now I actually have control over the production and mix. Glad you enjoyed this one. Thanks Wayne!

[Review of final unmastered version]

Wow man what a development, the rhythms are soft and very pleasing to the ears, very drifting and hypnotic,it seems you have found some equilibrium within this piece considering the balance and taming of the phased trumpet, even though this is un-mastered everything seems grounded and just perfect, for the track at this stage spawned from a happy accident man from something special comes something extra special...this is nOmad23 music as i discovered it, reminiscent of the 'Jungulator' phased and tripped out goodness, looking forward to the next update.Tops!

Yeah, I kept thinking about "Dancing in the Dreamtime" and "When Hippos sing with Frogs" as I was playing with stacks of various phasers and delay here. This is what I was hoping for with Live, and it turns out the key is MIDI devices. A mouse and laptop keyboard can take you only so far. It'll sound even better after I go after it with EQ and levels! Thanks for the thumbs up my friend!

wonderful soundscape! rythmic bliss, i love it. reminds me a bit of micky hart and the rhythm devils. he had a huge steel i beam that he stretched piano strings over. when he played it he got sounds somewhat like these. i love rythmic percussive driven grooves. superbly done!

I hadn't thought about Micky Hart's monochord while doing this, but it explains why I've had so much fun. His books are worth reading, too. Our approach to percussion is quite different, but I really appreciate his work. This one will be pretty cool when I get it done. Thanks for the listen and review!

there's a very sweet fun-poking vibe you manage to carry thru-out this track - i didn't hear the earlier version, but after reading your page i think you got a lotta overtone and other rhythmic possibilities to play with here - looking forward to the next post (and checking yr other stuff, too)

n0mad23 replied Unknown
Nice - you caught the "fun-poking" which I wasn't sure would get across. My trumpet playing daughter is 14, so finding the humor and fun for me is becoming increasingly challenging. I've come to accept the role of parents is to allow their teens to gnaw on our bones for practice. At least it is in my case - and she's soooo much better than I was at her age! The feedback and suggestions have been brilliant so far, so I have high confidence this one will evolve into something quite nice. Thanks for the listen and review.

Steevo 9th Jun 2010 06:36 - 14 years ago
Yes tribal sounding, I think you do have variation in there that's very subtle and the track develops well.
Perhaps a more defined end would work?
n0mad23
n0mad23 replied Unknown
Steevo - Excellent call on the ending. I was actually thinking the same thing. I think some more variation in the percussion will help, and I need to continue playing with the MIDI controller and get a bit more control over my volume sliders. It's developing nicely, and I'm finding recording drafts to listen to and analyze is really helpful in figuring out what to focus on next. Constructive criticism such as this is exactly why I love this community - mega thanks and best regards.

Hey Bill - yup, all from that trumpet sample at the beginning. The one you heard and reviewed was actually a bit draftier than I usually post, and I think the next revision's sounding a bit better. I got pretty excited about what was possible playing to effects with the new MIDI controller. Thanks for the listen and encouragement. Most appreciated!
Fayz
Fayz 8th Jun 2010 12:47 - 14 years ago
well this certainly was something different. i can't say i've ever heard anything quite like it. umm, i would try a limiter on the track or something of the such, i had to turn my volume down because i was getting that scratchy noise from my headphones it was so loud. i like the way it started out, and then when it got to the tweaked trumpet i thought it was pretty cool. my thing with it is that it's bit long and repetitive. i think some variation would be nice. something as simple as pausing the trumpet for just a drum or bass or something for a few seconds would qualify is some variation. changing up the drums a little bit too.
- off topic - for what ever reason while i listened to this track i thought of like one of those trippy vidoes that are supposed to show you what it's like to trip on acid.
--
but the track as it is now, is an alright track. id have to say though that my favorite thing about it is it's uniqueness. so you get like bucket full of cool points for that. hope to see some more from you.

n0mad23 replied Unknown
Hi Fayz - thanks for the great constructive criticism and for letting me know you're hare on the site - I'll certainly be checking out your tracks. Good call on the limiter. I haven't played with this effect at all yet, and I think this is a good opportunity for it. I'm thinking that those high end frequencies need to be made 'rounder' or something too. At this point I think they're a bit like having fiber glass blown into your ear cavities. Definitely long and repetitive, too. All these are useful observations and will serve me greatly as I revisit this one. Thanks again, and cheers!

At this stage, it is probably too early to post this one, but I really feel like I need some advice. Like looking through a microscope, I'm now unable to see the Big Picture! This one actually surprised me, as I know what's possible with filters, but it's a shock anyway. I think with some work this will actually turn into something really worth sharing. Glad you approve of the direction it's going! Cheers.
