I prefer to call myself a 'composer' rather than producer, and I'm really a composer in the 'old school' sense. I've only been learning to use computer software for recording/producing music for about a year now. Before that I would write for classical ensembles (chamber music, orchestra, jazz big band etc.) or pop like songs, and the only computer program I used was sibelius, so I could give all the players their print music parts. Before that (about 7 years ago) I used to write music the REALLY old fashioned way (with a pencil and music paper!!!)
I have a degree in music from the University of Queensland (performance-classical guitar / second study composition).
guitar (and bass), a little keyboard.
Audacity and tunafish (sequencer) were what I started with. Now I use Cakewalk music creator 5.
(it only cost me $80!)
Mostly I like peace and quiet when I'm not writing my own stuff. God knows I need a break from all the music floating around in my head. I do listen to stuff on sites like looperman, or myspace when I hear of a new artist.
Soundgarden-superunknown
Nirvana-nevermind
St. Germain-tourist
that's all I can think of for now.
Could be anything. Any sound, not even 'musical' sounds, but if you want some names then:
from classical- Bartok, Stravinsky,Beethoven
from early rock- Led Zep, Hendrix
later stuff- early metallica, soundgarden, Alice in chains, Nirvana
from Jazz- Miles Davis, Mingus, Gershwin
other- Satriani, vai, soooo many more that I can't put in, including much world music.
Could potentially sound like anything.
