My first rock album I bought on my own was Styx - Crystal Ball when I was about 11. My mother had Paradise Theater hidden in one of those plastic milk crates where all the oldies were stashed.
Needless to say i was hooked until Iron Maiden caught my attention (I rented Powerslave from the Library). After that it was Metallica, Judas Priest, Testament, Slayer, King Diamond, Alice in Chains, etc.
I learned to expand my horizon in my thirties with Chicago, Yes, Triumph, Mott The Hoople and the like.
